Mid 40s skin care

HI I’m confused! Have been reading on skin care recently as I’m trying to improve the condition of my sensitised dehydrated skin with clogging around nose and chin. I use detmalogica daily exfoliator. Use cleanser, double wear serum and moisturiser but think I need more. I’m confused if i need retinol, glycolic or hylarounic acid. I’m sure there are experts here who can hopefully give me a pointer in the right direction. My skin is looking much better, still red but that is rosacea over nose and cheeks. Can someone please explain what is the best option (in layman’s terms) Grin

I think if you have got roscea all of those that you mentioned in addition would be too harsh. Azelaic acid maybe?

im no expert but im in my mid 40’s. I have dry and sensitive skin and each morning and night i put a bit of coconut oil on my face followed by Boots No7 day and nigh creams. I also use the facial wash with the cloth. Bought as a Christmas gift set. I also use Superdrug Naturally Radiant Glycolic toner and my skin has never been better.

I've had to overhaul my skincare and am the same age (ishWink)

I cleanse with coconut oil
Cleanse with Aime face wash
Blue Nivea
Pat avacado oil over my face

I'm about to try an essence serum after the face wash to see if that helps further.

I'm only on day 2 of this and my skin looks amazing after being a mess for months. I have the same skin as you and my rosacea is looking better already.

Thank you-I am using the blue Nivea at the moment and my skin feels so soft! I will google Azelaic acid thank you.

I've given up on all skin care and am just using jojoba oil to cleanse and moisturise. Only been using it for a few days but so far my skin feels lovely. It's supposed to be good for acne too and since I've been getting some blind spots I thought I'd give it a go.

The daily exfoliater - is that a scrub type thing with little bits in it? It might be too harsh.

Hyaluronic acid is a hydrating thing - it's not acid I the sense of irritating your skin and occurs in the body naturally. It attracts and holds water and should plump up your skin. It's in lots of creams and serums.

Glycolic acid is a chemical exfoliant. It dissolves dead skin cells revealing newer ones underneath. Retinol encourages your skin to renew itself. It's a form of Vitamin A. Both of these can be drying.

Lactic acid is a more gentle chemical exfoliant. There's also salicylic acid which is more for clearing blocked pores.

Oily skin can be a sign of being dehydrated as skin tries to help itself by producing more sebum.

You might be drying out your skin too much with the Dermalogica and the cleanser. I use La Roche Posay Toleraine cleanser for sensitive skin. I get about 4 months out of the big 400ml bottle which is about €20. Only use warm water, never hot. I have heard CeraVe hydrating cleanser is good too.

La Roche-posay Toleraine nuit moisturiser might be good for the rosacea. Or the cicaplast baume.

You could do an oil cleanse first and then the LRP afterwards to take off the oil.

I don't know what the double wear serum is you mentioned. Lots of serums are rubbish though compared to specifically buying a retinol or acid or Vit C serum.

Also you should wear SPF every day of at least 30, and this will be compulsory if you are going to try acid exfoliants or retinol.

I wouldn't exfoliate more than once a week with rosacea OP no matter what the product says.

Bairnsmum05 · 05/05/2019 13:21

Thank you for the replies I appreciate it. I don’t exfoliate daily maybe once twice a week. It does say daily but I’m not keen on it. I will research LRP as have heard positive things. Considering IPL for rosacea too.

Apparently physical exfoliators are bad and chemical are much better.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 05/05/2019 17:18

I keep things simple. Cleanse and use spf moisturiser by day, cleanse and use night moisturiser or serum by night.

I am a big fan of the Superdrug vitamin E range which I think is excellent value for money.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 05/05/2019 17:19

I don't have rosacea though. My skin is quite sensitive and I get a strange bubbly effect if it reacts, which you can't see, but I can feel. The nearest I can get to describing it is the bubbles under wallpaper!

Bairnsmum05 · 05/05/2019 19:20

There is so much on the market it’s hard to know what is best to do-i hear conflicting information about what is best and it’s confusing! I’ve heard the Superdrug range is good- I’ve got a lot of Clinique cleanser to get through before I look for something new 😂

I'm a huge fan of Superdrug Naturally Radiant Glycolic toner. Since I started using it, my skin looks so fresh and radiant. I use it daily. I also use Dermologica's Daily Exfoliant every morning. I have sensitive skin but both of these products work really well for me.

fudesina · 05/05/2019 20:01

If you have rosacea I would just keep it really simple. Stop the exfoliating as it will aggregate the redness, Azelaic will be a better substitute.

I use the CeraVe face wash and moisturiser on my skin and it's lovely. Doesn't aggravate it at all. My skin can be very dry without a decent moisturiser. Wear sunscreen everyday.

I can't use any of the clinic range as my skin hates it but is fine with Laura Mercia oil free tinted moisturiser. It's trial and error really with rosacea. Might be worth joining a FB group?

I’m so needing to update my skincare as well mid 40s, few wrinkles but grey tired looking skin. I’m so confused by all these acids and serums. The Ordinary just baffles me!

QueenofCBA · 05/05/2019 21:02

I am in the middle of trying to make a bit more of an effort...
My skin is terribly dehydrated, so I bought some olive squalane from facetheory. Instead of the recommended 3 drops I use 6 and have not seen the slightest improvement whatsoever!

boomboom1234 · 05/05/2019 22:08

I'm in exactly the boat at the moment and I went on the ordinary website and filled in a form for advice and had to submit horrible up close pictures. Anyway they came back to me within an hour or so with suggestions of five products and a regime to follow. I have ordered all of it for less than £30 so going to give it a try!! No idea if it's any good but kept reading good stuff so I'm going to try it.

MsMustDoBetter · 05/05/2019 22:10

I am using The Ordinary along with caring a bit less and spending less time in front of ten mirror.

I may not look 21, but my confidence is definitely on the up!
