What kind of dress would you wear to a wedding in the Deep South. It's a big wedding in a lovely converted barn type thing.

Many friends from the Deep South in their twenties/thirties- they all wear maxis/tea length dresses. They are all pretty glam, and all the wedding pictures I have seen everyone has dressed up. So I wouldn't worry about being overdressed Smile

Americans love dc in kilts, my ds now owns one as a result, we didn't bother in the U.K.
so I would get one for your ds.

The only weddings I attended whilst living in the USA were super smart but you only get a buffet as the sit down meal is the night before. Alcohol was also in short supply, well free alcohol (there was a bar but didn't take cards fooling all the British and European contingent which was quite large so someone went out for booze which apparently was fine)

@MorrisZapp 😂😂 there's only a couple of us travelling from Scotland and both men are married. The grooms family have all lived there for years now.

Do people not tend to wear anything in their hair at weddings there then?

No, especially not in a barn in the afternoon.

Hats are much more common in Southern weddings than Northern, so I don’t think you can go wrong wearing one.

I disagree with this. I live in the Deep South and go to about 5 weddings a year at many different venues. I haven't seen a hat, even in a high church Episcopal or Catholic wedding, in more than 20 years. The last time I wore a hat to a wedding was in Scotland.

As to the kilt, yes it might be hot in October, but that is the time of year that many Scottish festivals are held in the Southern US, and I think that given the natural ventilation the garment provides, it's definitely doable.

My cousin got married in Athens, Georgia. Many guests were casual. A lot of women in tea dresses, men in chinos and open neck shirts. The men in kilts were more photographed than the bride!

Enjoy the wedding!

The dress depends very much on the venue and the time of day. I've been to weddings that were in the afternoon and people dressed casually, and I've been to night time black tie weddings. You should be able to find out more detail of what the expected dress is.
