The perennial issue of good quality t shirts, where to find??

As the title says really, I just want some plain t shirts (including white) that are not see through/won't shrink etc and will look smart enough for work. I'm really struggling this year to find anywhere with any decent ones. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

I find Uniqlo really heavy, short and boxy and they definitely shrink massively in the drier!

Calixtine · 02/05/2019 19:07

Horrible neckline too!

My Uniqlo T shirts have always washed well. I bought DS some very upmarket Ts and returned them because they twisted once washed. It was my main complaint to the CSR: I have cheap Uniqlo shirts, that cost less than one third of your price, and they wash straight, and yours don't. What am I paying for?

TSSDNCOP · 02/05/2019 20:42

Uniqlo. For work I wear the silky, slash neck ones. They wash beautifully and hang really nicely.

Applesbananaspears · 02/05/2019 21:35

Weekday are amazing. Wash brilliantly and hold their shape. They have a website but they're also available through ASOS

Totally agree, they are amazing

I wear a t shirt under a jacket most days for work and have found the best to be:

  • Warehouse smart fit tee (in black , too see through in white), a lovely silky feel
  • Zara TRF cheapo silky T-shirts, about £5, again black only as the white too see through. They are an occasional lucky find in the shop.
  • Uniqlo U T-shirt, have this in white and it is excellent quality, not see through, good thick material but still fitted - don't find it boxy or shapeless unlike previous posters.

Others have mentioned Me & Em but I've found these too boxy for work . Ok quality though.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/05/2019 22:42

I like Warehouse smart-fit tee per pp - I have all the stripy versions, plus black - and also Cos. The Cos ones are thicker, and cotton.

Get a time machine and go to Gap and Next in the nineties Sad

Catchingbentcoppers · 03/05/2019 07:35

@TheCanterburyWhales Can you link to your H & M tees please?

MaudesMum · 03/05/2019 08:11

Another vote for the M&S pure cotton ones in plain colours - I particularly like the slash neck ones with slightly longer sleeves - and they do wear well. I've also had some good results with Boden - but only ever buy in one of their (many) sales.

Here are the H&M linen ones, out of stock at the moment though seemingly in the UK. (I'm in Italy, but they are the ones)

I've always been into quality clothes and have a lot of Whistles etc.

The best t-shirts I have found this year....Primark slouch fit. £2. I
Have a large chest and the neck line is great - all others seem to be up to your neck these are lower but high enough to be decent and wear under a work jacket.

H&M do have some nice quality linen ones for a decent price as well.

Processedpea · 03/05/2019 14:17

French connection one is nice 20

Lambzig · 04/05/2019 22:18

Baukjen, they last years. I just bought a gorgeous back v neck one that just looks really nice.

I also second me and em. I bought a black drapes t shirt from them 4 years ago. I liked it so much I bought a back up. I have worn it so much but the back up is still in its bag because it still looks like new.

applesarerroundandshiny · 05/05/2019 00:47

I don't know how to link on the app but I bought some T shirts from Uniqlo which are a different style to those linked here, the are cotton/Lycra and fitted but not clingy, ribbed scoop neck

In the past I have been a fan of Primark's stretchy scoop neck T shirts but I haven't had any luck colours/size wise this year and those I had last year seem to be a more synthetic looking material. I've still got a couple of the slouch fit ones from last year and they are comfy but the neck has pulled out of shape

DameDoom · 05/05/2019 12:00

NigellasGuest I completely agree although I can see why people do balk at t shirts that start off at a £35 price point. To me, a brilliant t shirt is as important as a fabulous pair of jeans and an amazing thin crew neck -it's uniform dressing which takes away stress and pares everything down. A good t is part of that arsenal and can work out cheaper.
I'd rather have one brilliant t that I wear to death than 6 or 7 cheap ones that need replacing every few months.
A good t shirt is a thing of beauty and can elevate any outfit but you will have to pay for it.

teta · 05/05/2019 13:24

Vildnis Waimea lyocell/ linen mix t shirts are brilliant. I have about 7 as I have a propensity for spilling food down my front.
A slouchy v neck in both grey and white.
I second the H&M linen ones. I buy the v neck and scoop neck every year.

NigellasGuest · 05/05/2019 13:33

Absolutely DameDoom
I've worn mine regularly for two years. Two years! Happy in them at work (VERY casual, messy environment) and also dressed up a bit for the evening. Sometimes you do have to fork out. If it was £35 for a pair of shoes you love, you'd buy them in an instant.

TheWombat · 05/05/2019 13:35

I just bought an M&S Autograph one for £20. It looks good with the sleeves rolled up, soft cotton, fitted but not tight, and not see-through (with a nude bra anyway).

I tried mint Velvet last year and they were dreadful. The seams twisted in the wash and they went so shapeless. Am hoping for better things (for less outlay) this year..
