How do I clean this ring?

Does anyone have any tips as to how I can clean this ring?

It looks like rust around one side of the sapphire, but I'm certain that it can't be rust. Maybe foundation or something?

Anyway, I have tried soapy water and a polishing cloth, and it's not shifting in this one section. I googled but the advice is conflicting. Some say use ammonia others say this can cause damage. I don't even know where to buy ammonia from. Any help gratefully received.

Do not buy amonia. John Lewis do a jewellery cleaner where you dip the ring in and leave it immersed as directed. Then dry it and polish it. I suspect they will deliver it. A decent jewellers might stock it too.

First of all, I use Fairy Liquid to clean mine. Definitely worth a go and use a toothbrush to clean the setting.

The only other thing that might have happened is the Rhodium plating might have lifted exposing the base metal. White gold is Rhodium plated I believe. I have had my white gold wedding ring replated. Therefore if it looks worn, then it could be this. I would try the other suggestions first and then take it to a jeweller for replating if you cannot shift the mark and it looks more serious.

I use neat fairy liquid and a toothbrush to clean mine

Thank you for your reply @BubblesBuddy

I have tried soaking in fairy, but not used a toothbrush, I used a polishing cloth. I'll give that a go and if the toothbrush doesn't work I'll buy the jewellery cleaner. Is it this one?

When you use it neat, do you soak it, or just pour it on and scrub @justthecat ?

Sonic cleaners are the best, some independent jewellers have them immediately available.

justthecat · 01/05/2019 12:43

I just pour fairy a onto toothbrush and give it a good scrub, then rinse under water

Ultrasonic machines designed for jewellery work really well and fairly cheap to buy.

Sorry no link appeared. However any of the dip ones in a small container are worth a go. I have also had jewellery cleaned by a sonic cleaner in a jewellers. Comes up really well. If the mark still does not shift, ask about replating. It is not very expensive to do. Then it does look like new. (Assumig the ring is not platinum by the way),

I soak my rings in a cup with fairy liquid and warm water then use a soft toothbrush, it works pretty well. And just take them to the jeweller every now and then for a proper clean and polish.

I soak in a cup too with fairy liquid and scrub with a tooth brush.

No amonia!
