Low maintenance solution for grey hairs (dark hair)

Please can any of you recommend some solutions to about 1/5th grey hair on a background of dark brown hair. I'm pretty low key style wise and lazy! Something subtle that won't be obvious as it grows out. I wondered about henna but not sure that takes well on grey?

Would be ok with going to a salon but worry that I won't be able to go often enough and end up with regrowth that would look worse that my current salt and pepper!

I'm 39 and the grey is suddenly arriving thick and fast. While I admire those who embrace, I'm just not ready.

Total novice so please help with terminology like T section or half foils?! Would these be easier to blend as they grow out?

Thanks lovely mumsnetters.

How long/short is your hair? I used a box colour on fairly short hair for decades and it was fine, always lovely and glossy. Two people I know with longer hair do it and there's now quite an obvious build up at the ends.

MAKE SURE YOU DO A PATCH TEST! I eventually developed a reaction and ended up going cold turkey and am probably 95% grey (but sort of honey coloured somehow?) now.

Thanks for replying Smile. It's short and scanty. Roughly how often did it need redoing?

I spent years using lush's henna (as they have two brown colours I used) and loved it. It does cover grey if you do it regularly enough (about every 2 months) but I have decided to embrace the grey and it's finally all grown out!

I did it about every five-six weeks. I have quick growing hair. I was also careful to try and stick to the roots area where possible so as to avoid too much build up.

If you go for a box colour, go light. I'm a dark brunette snd my colour is dark blond or light brown. Anything from mid brown is actually witchy black in my experience!

I just bought some caffeine shampoo with a little bit of dye in, which builds up over time and in theory covers the grey. I've no idea if it's any good yet but might be worth a try as it's low maintenance.

I’m gradually going lighter as it doesn’t show the grey so quickly although I miss my glossy dark hair.

I have the exact same problem.

I go to the hairdresser roughly every 3 months for an all over colour and cut. My hair is really dark, but I go for a mid brown colour which hides the grey for a little longer.

I then use a box dye about 4-5 weeks. I really just do the roots and then rub it all over for the last 5-10 mins max.

Thank you all. It feels a bit of a milestone in life when you look in the mirror and see those sprinkling of grey hairs, that only you thought you noticed are now a lot, that everyone will notice. Flowers
