Swimming and hair

I swim regularly and despite wearing a swimming cap, my hair always gets wet and straw-like. What do you do with your hair after a swim? Is there a good leave on conditioner that you can recommend that I can put on after a swim. Or maybe a spray?

Put this on before to protect your hair.
Chlorine removing shampoo afterwards (the Philip Kingsley one is also good) and then slather with any cheapish conditioner (since I get through loads). Often Aussie three minute miracle.

I can second both the Philip Kingsley swimcap and Aussie 3 Mon miracle.

Silly question but do you have to put a swim cap on top of Philip Kingsley swimcap? Can I just use a normal shampoo as can't find a PK chlorine eliminating one?

Masters swimmer here 😊 🏊🏼‍♀️

I swear by Paul Mitchell No 3 clarifying shampoo - I also use his conditioner, but that’s less important tbh

My hair is shoulder length and has ‘lights’ none of it is dry, and I spend hours in the pool every week!

Basically, chlorine forms a bond on you hair that needs to be broken. If you don’t break this off, any conditioner you use won’t get to the hair at all and it gets worse and worse.

Another thing you can do certainly initially is to wash it (no more than once a month) with washing up liquid and that cuts through the chlorine, but since I’ve switched to PM shampoo I’ve never needed to do that.

Whatever you do, don’t use anything tresemee, it leaves a coating.

when I used to swim regularly, I always made my hair wet in the shower before the swim and put conditioner in. then cap on.

I just rinsed it well after the swim and washed with normal shampoo.

I read this tip once in a magazine. was explained with the sponge like characteristics of the hair: basically if a sponge is not dry but already saturated (with water and conditioner in our case), then it cannot suck up any of the pool water anymore and doesn't dry out in the first place. worked much better for me than the special post swim shampoo and conditioner.

Another vote for Philip Kingsley Swimcap. I put it on my hair before putting my actual swimcap on (can't stand hair getting in my face when I'm swimming).
