Does anyone actually wear polyester dresses or shirts?

I keep getting pop ups advertising these lovely dresses and shirts from various places, but in 99.9% of them they are polyester.
I cannot wear polyester?
can I?
I am a hot person

I can't either. It feels horrible and it looks cheap.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 26/04/2019 18:15

They are all disgusting! I just don't know how people can.

MindyStClaire · 26/04/2019 18:20

The vast majority of my clothes are polyester. The vast majority of clothes for sale are polyester. Of course most people can and do wear it.

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/04/2019 18:20

The only time I would wear a polyester "chiffon" is for anything "evening" in the winter. Otherwise it's horrible, hot, sticky and nasty. Funnily enough, I was eyeing some fab trousers on an Insta boutique...and then realised they were polyester. No thank you. I am also a "hot person" Smile

Settlersofcatan · 26/04/2019 18:22

I'm cold all the time so polyester is just fine for me. Also doesn't need ironing!

BogglesGoggles · 26/04/2019 18:23

I have quite a bit. Doesn’t require ironing and is flattering. Wouldn’t wear it in hot weather.

EleanorReally · 26/04/2019 18:24

I might go with viscose, which doesn't need ironing and is supposedly breathable but I am still fearful

It can also cone in different finishes so can vary from looking and feeling horrible to being really creamy.

ZaraW · 26/04/2019 18:25

I always said no to polyester until I bought a Pleats Please Issey Miyake dress on EBay. It was ridiculously expensive but it's beautiful. I wore it travelling around Asia and had lots of complements. I can hand wash it and it dries perfectly with no ironing it's great for travel.

PlatypusLeague · 26/04/2019 19:21

I avoid polyester, but if a mostly cotton t-shirt or bra has a bit of polyester in it, it might be OK. 100 per cent polyester is sticky, scratchy, itchy and static. It's always disappointing when you see a nice top or dress but find it's polyester.

As for viscose, I have a casual dress which is stretchy viscose and it's fine. Apparently viscose comes from cellulose and is structurally similar to cotton, so maybe that's why!

ZaraW · 26/04/2019 20:07

Platypus my dress mentioned above is polyester and is non static and very soft.

FaithInfinity · 27/04/2019 08:21

I bought a polyester top, the colour was gorgeous. I wore it for an hour and had put stains! Had to get rid (charity shop not bin!) because I just couldn’t wear it.

Decormad38 · 27/04/2019 08:23

Bought a couple of Gap dresses that are. They are my favourite to be honest because they are not as heavy.

EleanorReally · 27/04/2019 08:25

So disappointing when I find an outfit i like and check, the print is so small on the labels, to find it is polyester.

I can only cope with natural fibres and they seem really hard to come by. I live in jeans in the winter and linen in the summer. I just don't know who wears this stuff. It makes me hit, sweaty and my hair stands in end. How are shops like Wallis still open? They are meant to be about older women and yet everything is polyester

BloomedAgain · 27/04/2019 11:56

@ZaraW I've always wanted to own a Pleats Please dress. I imagine they don't crease?

It drives me mad, I loathe the stuff and really struggle to find natural materials. With all the emphasis on "plastics" in our environment, I am surprised no-one has yet highlighted the very clothes on our back.

This is a lovely description I just found of what polyester is:

Polyester is a polymer, or a long chain of repeating molecular units. The most common variety is polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, a plastic derived from crude oil that's used to make soda and ketchup bottles

I also find it sad that these synthetic materials are promoted by anti-animal products people as an acceptable alternative to natural products like wool or cotton, and the shops are promoting them as recycled or recyclable.

ZaraW · 27/04/2019 12:20

Bloomed no it never creases and dries in a couple of hours. I love it.

Applesbananaspears · 27/04/2019 12:23

All the time. Washes beautifully, never creases, doesn’t need ironing and usually looks great

thedevilinablackdress · 27/04/2019 12:26

I have a couple of vintage polyester blouses and usually wear with a cotton t-shirt underneath.

Unburnished · 27/04/2019 12:29

I also think there’s Polyester and Polyester.

Some are lovely, others are horrible. I think the key is in the quality of the fabric (thickness and type), that makes all the difference to how it hangs, looks, feels and its breathabity.

I quite like viscose and modal. Cant stand linen as it always looks awful after 10 minutes with baggy knee / bum / boob imprints.

timeisnotaline · 27/04/2019 12:38

I don’t think I’m particularly savvy about the different synthetics out there, but while my wardrobe is mainly cotton, linen, wool and silk there is definitely a place for synthetics. It can sit nicely for work rather than look more casual like cotton tops, throw in the machine rather than hand wash, and best of all is how much less I stress about getting snot and small children detritus over it with a baby and 3yo and just back at work.
Unlike the op however I’m a cold person. Hardly ever go anywhere without a jumper, and am frequently in multiple wood and down layers.

bingohandjob · 27/04/2019 12:50

Yes, got a fair few items with it on or made from it - tend to wear in colder/cooler weather so I can wear natural fibre layer like merino, cotton or bamboo under it next to skin as I do get sweaty otherwise. Lots of my wet/very cold weather gear has it in, too. I think there can be a huge amount of snobbery about polyester clothing "it's cheap looking/nasty" etc - not everyone can afford ~not~ to buy polyester for e.g. Work suits, uniform etc.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 27/04/2019 14:56

I have some thst look great on me and waah well with no ironing required but I have started walking to work and I sm arriving in a swesty mess unfortunatly :(
