How and where can you get highlighted hair that looks natural???

I now have too many grey hairs and can't not dye my hair. it is naturally quite dark brown at the roots but with natural light rown highlights. I'm finding impossible to achieve a colour that is remotely decent... If I have just one block colour it will look too dark if it's my natural 'root' colour or ridiculously light if it's a light brown. Have tried highlights at the hairdresser but only get those horrible streaks on the top of my head whereas the tips remain dark. Should be the other way around surely???
Anyway where can I get higlights that look natural like these and what exactly do i ask for?

How about a day-trip to London for a bit of pampering?

MrsFogi · 16/07/2007 16:53

Or a day trip to Paris where I have the address of the world's best colourist?

Oohhh...I definitely would if the finances allowed. We're on a saving period unfortunately....

I have a fab hairdressr,I found him about 7 yrs ago and have told him if he leaves I will hunt him down and make him do my hair or kill him.
You need to find someone you trust and stick with them until you die.
Find someone whose hair you admire and ask them where they get it done.

Toni and Guy do amazing colour - its not cheap though.

LaCerbiatta · 17/07/2007 11:36

How much would you expect to pay for colour in Toni and Guy?

Another question: has anyone had their hair stripped of old dyes before having new colour put in? I see it all the time on TV make overs but neve knew of anyone who had it done. I hate it how my hair always absorbs more dye near the roots because it's still 'colour virgin'

about 6 months ago i had very dark brown hair and bright red underneath.........went to 6 differant hairdressers in my town until i found the one i reallly liked.....she but a light brown all over then put 4 differant shades of blonde in foils after....she only charged me 40 quid and now the hard work is done she only charges 30 when i have it done.you dont always need to pay a fortune for someone to do a good job on ur hair

I agree with everyone else - time for a new salon. I flit between Vidal Sassoon and Toni & Guy and find them equally good at colour - though I feel a bit like at T&G they rush because they have so many booked in. Half head at vidal sasson is about £115 whereas it is cheaper at T&G but always been very happy with results at both.

Definatly ask for woven highlights and NOT slices. And go for colours that are not only near your natural hair colour bur also the same tone - I have dark ash blonde hair therefore ash blondes/browns look more natural than warmer tones on me.

If you're not sure about a new salon, you can always go in first for a consultation, see what their colour suggestions are and see if they understand what look you're after.
