White/grey hair on dark brown hair

I've got long dark brown hair which if I left to go natural would be streaked with white/grey wirey hairs. I think I am about 20-30% grey but it is very noticeable in my dark hair.
After dying the greys darker stopped working my hairdresser started highlighting my hair and it is now blonde.

The problem is that I HATE it. Blonde doesn't suit me, it ages me and makes me look washed out. I miss being a brunette. It makes me really sad when I see photos of myself. My greys aren't as noticeable but I hate my dark roots which appear very quickly after a hairdressing appointment. I have asked the hairdresser to darken it she had told me I would really regret it. She agreed to put in lowlights but the effect is that I am still very blonde.

Any advice on hair colours that would allow me to stay brunette but hide the grey? I fear this is an impossible ask. I am in my late 20s.

I know where you're coming from, I'm 43 and in my late 20s I started with semi-permanents- at home DIY ones and I still do the same today, I think as I err towards 50's I might need to go lighter but at the minute I want to remain brunette as it suits my cool colouring. I use (& recommend) nice & easy medium ash brown once a month, I leave it on for half an hour so that it 'takes' better, this covers my grey well & as it's got no ammonia or bleach in it it gradually fades evenly. Hairdressers won't tell you about these things as they want you spending £££ in their salons. I wash my hair every other day and it lasts a full month, it fades quicker if you use dandruff shampoo. For any root regrowth before the end of the month I also use the loreal Magic retouch spray in brown as req but not often.

My hair is in fantastic condition, the semi permanents are full of conditioners instead of the chemicals that dry out your hair.

I;m 47 with very dark, almost black hair, and starting going grey about 8 years ago. I have left it for the moment as my hair grows very quickly and if I dye it dark brown the grey roots will show within a week and I think would look worse. But I have short curly hair so the wiryness isn't so noticeable.

Could you go silver-grey - I see quite a lot of young women with this colour and it looks great! I agree that trying to maintain your natural colour will simply be an exercise in endlessly touching up your roots, but I can understand at your age you might not want to go 'au naturel'!

My hair is dark, and I have been using semi permanents in dark blonde to cover them. It works pretty well, is cheap, and is fine so far.

What are you thinking of doing OP?

When I used box dye the dye would not stick to my greys/whites. So after one wash they would be visible again. Perhaps I have different greys to those of you who manage with box dye successfully?

Embrace the greys! I have a friend who has dark brown hair with threads of grey through it - her hair’s in lovely condition and looks so silky. It looks amazing!

Thismumlikesart · 25/04/2019 08:40

My greys are very coarse and wirey definitely not silky! One day I will embrace them and go grey but I am only in my late 20s and do not feel comfortable with doing that yet.

Seriously try a box dye again, I've tried them all and some don't touch my pubic like greys! Nice & easy (left on for half) an hour does. & I know they warn you not to Blush but I also put it on my brows at the same time- but only for 5 minutes

I'm dark brown and over 50% grey and my hairdresser uses Inoa. It works really well. I had lowlights initially ( a few years ago) to break it up. But my hair lifts in the sun anyway, so now I now use the lightened bit as my lowlights and she just does my roots and puts dark streaks through the rest.

It lasts around 5 weeks, so I go to the hairdresser every 10 weeks and DIY in between. I buy stuff from a professional supplier, I find I always go too dark/orange if I use box dyes.

You can buy Wella Kolestan Professional rather than box dye. My hairdresser recommended it as I kept having to go back for my roots I'm very dark almost black and had white strands/roots since 18. I do my own roots every 2 weeks and then go to have a full head colour every 12 weeks - sometimes longer.
