Are super ga trainers ‘mumsy’?

takemeouttonight · 22/04/2019 22:00

Looking for some trainers that are a) good for wider feet and b) look nice with dresses for summer. Super ga pumps have caught my eye but I’m early 20s and didn’t know whether they are predominantly worn by more middle-aged women or seen as a bit on the ‘mumsy’ side (I know they are a fave of Kate Middleton apparently). I know it doesn’t really matter and we should wear whatever we want but I’m have a tough time choosing/finding some. TIA

And when you are a size 9, your choice of footwear is even more limited.
So bugger off the fashion police.

insecure123 · 24/04/2019 08:43

I don't have a pair (I had to google-never heard of/noticed them on anyone) but I like them. Those bloody vans are EVERYWHERE now. Every second person on the street has them so personally I would choose the superga over them.

BusterGonad · 24/04/2019 08:47

They are Mumsy, DOC is mumsy, she has 3 kids! I think when you become a mum you do end up being mumsy. It's inevitable really.

BunnyBob · 24/04/2019 08:51

If you don't look mumsy in your 40's, then you either dress like a teenage girl or like some kind of porn star! What's the alternative?

BusterGonad · 24/04/2019 09:04

Bunny 😂

MotherOfGodFella · 24/04/2019 09:07

To be fair OP is in her early 20s.

But yeah I’d be more than happy to look as “mumsy” as the Duchess of Cambridge Confused

takemeouttonight · 24/04/2019 09:08

@BunnyBob I think that’s the problem I feel a bit in the middle as a 20-something, a lot of other trainers I think ‘nope too young and teenager-ish’ I think I just need to embrace mumsyness now as a mum 😂
I do get everyone’s point about just wearing what you want to wear and not sticking silly labels on things but I overthink and it’s hard!

If you are are in your 20's then I would imagine you can still look fabulous in really trendy trainers- why don't you go for something with a chunky sole but not too extreme like the Nike airforce ones? Platform trainers seem popular too.

BusterGonad · 24/04/2019 09:22

Mother to me the DoC looks like a posh mum, you can tell she's a mum by her practical of duty clothing. She's obviously gorgeous and I'm not being rude as mums are gorgeous too. Same as non mums can be frumpy.

MissBridgetJones · 24/04/2019 09:24

I have very wide flintstone feet. I have two pairs. So much more comfortable than converse x

MissBridgetJones · 24/04/2019 09:25

Look on MandM website. I paid £12 a pair for mine!!

JurassicGirl · 24/04/2019 09:28

I've got a white pair of Superga trainers & they are so comfortable that I don't care what anyone thinks! I LOVE THEM!

However, I'm 38 & a Mum Grin

BusterGonad · 24/04/2019 09:32

I bought my first pair of Converse 5 months ago, felt very Mumsy doing so, had to give in though as I'm living in a super hot country with a rainy season and they are perfect!

Sarcelle · 24/04/2019 09:33

If you like them, wear them. Unless I am mistaken you are a regular person rather than a fashionista style setting regular in Vogue, so nobody is going to notice whether your feet look mumsy.

WoahThereMama · 24/04/2019 09:33

I have a pair of silver supergas from ages ago which still look like new due to barely being worn. I put them on at the weekend and took them off again after 5 secs because I felt that they did look a bit frumpy. Can’t quite bring myself to get rid of them though.

takemeouttonight · 24/04/2019 09:34

Oh yes I agree the duchess of Cambridge always looks beautiful and elegant (even in her casual clothes) but it is a ‘posh mum’ look and a lot of her clothes would look a bit odd on me

KateyKube · 24/04/2019 09:36

I like my supergas. I got the ones with ribbon laces and rose gold eyelets. They are probably really mumsy - I’m 40.

Mominatrix · 24/04/2019 09:37

Mums wear trainers because they are comfortable and practical. If you don’t want comfortable and practical, don’t wear trainers. I see mums wearing supergas, converse, golden goose, McQueen, addidas, vans, Nike, new balance, Brooks, ASICS, Gucci...I.e., the whole gamut of trainers.

MaybeDoctor · 24/04/2019 09:58

What on earth is wrong with being/wearing something that is 'mum'? Personally, I am very proud to be one. Putting that aside, it is just an aspect of womanhood and a time of life - we therefore choose the clothes that suit that time of life. It is nonsensical to try and deny it.

People should also get off 'Mumsnet' if it is such a problem! Grin

MaybeDoctor · 24/04/2019 10:01

That is not aimed at you, OP, by the way. But I have been on mumsnet for a long time and seen endless yattering about 'mumboots', 'mum jeans', 'mum' this and 'mum' that...

youngestisapsycho · 24/04/2019 10:15

I wear them, I'm 43. I have wide feet and they are so comfy. I dont do 'fashion'. Just wear what I like the look of... I don't get how stuff is labelled as 'mumsy', 'school run mum' or whatever... if you like something then buy it... who gives a shit if no one else likes it.

Featherstep · 24/04/2019 10:17

Hmm, I loved my silver ones, wore them to death and I am buying another pair this summer. They go with everything and are flattering and comfy.
I'm late 30s and never thought of them as mumsy but I suppose it's not a shoe you see on teenagers much. Come to think of it, most of the other supergas I've seen have been on mums in London, so yeah I guess you're right to some degree. I don't mind though. And it depends how you wear them. Floral tunic, leggings, Superga would be beyond mumsy in my book. Denim shirt, white jeans, Superga = classic, inoffensive, quite chic to me.

BusterGonad · 24/04/2019 10:31

I love trainers, flat ballet pump style shoes and boots with a block heel or kitten heel. The boots sound gross but in real life they are not (hopefully!). My biggest weakness is suede boots. But at the end of the day a trainer is your best bet for doing stuff that mums/adult women have to do!

BusterGonad · 24/04/2019 10:33

MaybeDoctor yeah but the mum boot and mum jeans threads are funny, I love a giggle about what is considered a mum boot/Jean just as much as what is considered a dad trainer.

starfleet · 24/04/2019 11:19

I prefer them to Converse. I wear a size 5.5 but a 5 in Superga as they are a slightly bigger fit.

I have them in grey leather and also a navy patent pair. They go with pretty much everything and are comfortable.
