Moisturiser for acne - cetaphil or CeraVe?

Troton · 22/04/2019 06:57

I’ve heard these two mentioned a lot for people with sensitive skin and on acne treatments.
I’m trying benzoyl peroxide again (after applying too much and biting my face off last time!) and don’t know what moisturiser to use.
I need the most simple one as my face reacts to lots of things.
My face hates Effaclar duo for example I think because it is fragranced.
I’ve just looked at my cetaphil and it says for body??

I use cerave with retinol (retinol isn’t in the , it’s a separate thing), and I really rate it.

I use this one www.laroche-posay.co.uk/toleriane-sensitive-fluid?gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhKHhurrj4QIV6LvtCh0M1waPEAQYDiABEgL66_D_BwE#fo_c=1877&fo_k=49a7c40137277405ae25dfa3299f4d80&fo_s=gplauk.

Lots of them have Shea in which you need to avoid.

If you get the Cerave one, go for the one for normal skin www.superdrug.com/New-In/CeraVe-Facial-Moisturising-Lotion-52ml/p/774868.

I also like Clinique moisture surge- you could get a sample to try.

Cerave I've also used the Cerave PM facial moisturiser and the American version of this can can't tell any difference.

Ive used both, and much prefer Cerave

shitpark · 22/04/2019 14:53

Ugh, missed apostrophe

mintbiscuit · 22/04/2019 16:10

I use BP and the cerave cream (not the lotion).

I don’t like the cetaphil lotion.

MarkleSparkle · 22/04/2019 16:12

Yes Cerave. It’s hydrating whereas Cetaphil doesn’t really do much.

problem1234567 · 22/04/2019 16:15

I bought Cervae Moisturising Lotion when I went on Roaccutane. Not that impressed with it. No more moisturising than Simple or Nivea and they are a few pounds where as the Cerave was £10.

HundredMilesAnHour · 22/04/2019 16:34

This cream has been great for my sensitive but acne-prone skin. It seems to have really helped clear my skin despite being very gentle. Not cheap but worth every penny.

I use the Cetaphil daily SPF 50 moisturiser, that one is definitely intended for the face. I also use Cetaphil cleanser. I like both. The moisturiser is lightweight and provides high sun protection, doesn’t make me greasy and also avoids my skin drying out. No irritation or break outs.

In the evening I use a face oil, currently using plant derived squalene from The Ordinary which I really like (also use the salicylic acid from there).

Both The Ordinary and Cetaphil are very reasonable prices, and I’ve found them to be effective too. I bought them for their effectiveness, the price is a welcome bonus! Cetaphil products are regularly on 3 for 2 in Boots.

I’ve never tried CeraVe so can’t compare but recommend Cetaphil.

bedunkalilt · 22/04/2019 16:42

Also sorry for hijacking Grin but for those who prefer CeraVe, what makes it preferable to Cetaphil?

AnnaMagnani · 22/04/2019 18:21

I'd say Cerave, and I have used both. Cetaphil is bland and won't upset your skin which is why it gets recommended so often.

Cerave is similar but actually has positive ingredients for acne - it has hyaluronic, it has ceramides which are both massively hydrating and it has niacinamide which is anti-acne so it's a much better formula. This is the sort of thing that usually attracts a much bigger price tag but Cerave has just been hanging around in the US as the go to acne moisturiser and thing to use if you are using Retin-A.

JDSTER · 22/04/2019 19:09

As Anna suggests, Cerave is superior to cetaphil because of its ingredients. Ceramides help your skin barrier and niacinamide is a great ingredient which also boosts the barrier function of the skin and is anti- inflammatory to boot, so great for acne or those using topical retinoids or prescription Tretinoin. Cetaphil doesn’t contain these ingredients

bedunkalilt · 22/04/2019 19:30

Very helpful, thanks!

I’ve been using Cetaphil purely for the ‘bland’ anti irritation, as I was having all sorts of issues, but I’ll give CeraVe a go if it’s equally non irritating but has niacinamide etc, I need to buy some more cleanser and moisturiser soon anyway.

Debenhamshandtowel · 22/04/2019 20:20

Do you use the pump bottle sort of CeraVe on your face or just the small tubes? I bought two lots of CeraVe for the face , one with spf which makes my eyes itch so I can’t use it. The other is a night cream which I really rate. However if I could buy a large pump bottle I’d rather do that!

I use CeraVe cleanser btw.

Troton · 22/04/2019 20:56

Hmm interesting so most of you clearly really rate cerave however if t has added ingredients - niacinamide etc I’m wondering if it might be too “complicated” for my sensitive skin that seems to react to various things and cetaphil might be more plain

JDSTER · 22/04/2019 22:02

The added ingredients Troton repair and strengthen the skin barrier-they’re not irritating in themselves. Cetaphil doesn’t offer the same skin benefits. Fragrance is a common irritant and Cerave is fragrance free. If you’re sensitive to a particular ingredient in the products, then that’s a different matter.

coldshins · 22/04/2019 22:26

Cerave. It's eczema association approved so I've started using it on full body. Gentle with no junk, I want something plain I won't react to - and I react to Simple.

Troton · 25/04/2019 00:16

Thank you everyone for your help.
I’ve ended up ordering both CeraVe cream and also the cetaphil spf50 face moisturiser as I got sunburnt at the weekend so need something for sunny days!

Troton · 25/04/2019 00:20

I don’t Know if I can continue with the benzoyl peroxide though. My skin is sooooooo dry and red and irritated yet oily at the same time !
I’m only using 2.5 percent very very small amount once a day or every other day :-(

coldshins · 26/04/2019 04:06

This vid is very helpful

Troton · 26/04/2019 20:05

Thanks you coldshins that was a helpful video (although she does like to repeat herself 😂) but some good product recommendations

Troton · 02/08/2019 12:25

Just updating on this. I’ve been using CeraVe moisturise and I’m very inpressed. It sinks in quickly and doesn’t leave me greasy and hasn’t caused more spots. It’s very hydrating. Still struggling to use benzoyl peroxide more than once every three days though and therefore still struggling with acne :-(
My face is just SO oily it’s ridiculous. Oil just pours out of it.
