Removing coarse dark hair from legs

Hi not sure if this is the right section but not much traffic in the pre teen group! My dd13 wants to start leg hair removal. I'm super worried as she has thick coarse dark hair on legs like me. Unfortunately we also have sensitive skin, when I shave I suffer from really bad ingrown hair and itchiness. The legs need shaving every day as the hair grows so quick, and even when freshly shaved you can still see the black root cause of the hair. I've tried every razor under the sun. Waxing is not an option as she's too scared of the pain..(for me the effects only last less than a week anyway) any ideas? Just don't want her to go through what I have always been through!

Hair removal cream
Hair removal mitts
Battery shaver

I use a Phillips lumea. It’s quite expensive but there’s occasionally good deals around and it has really helped with ingrown hairs. If you stick with it the hair doesn’t grow back at all. I have eczema on my legs and it has been a life saver not having to shave anymore.

Lidl's are currently selling an epilator for £14.99.

Phillips lumea.

They often come up on eBay - I assume because you don’t need them after a couple of months

Marilynmansonsthermos · 18/04/2019 22:22

Wow thanks for tips will check them out! Does the Phillips lumea hurt?

Im sure this came up on another similar thread that you aren't supposed to use the lumea on under 18s.

Happilyacceptingcookies · 18/04/2019 22:46

Epilate. Sorry!

concernedforthefuture · 18/04/2019 22:52

The Lumea would be great for you if you're white (it works best on pale skin / dark hair - the greater the contrast between skin & hair colour, the better the results). I don't think it's recommended for teens though so your DD might like to try creams for now.

Waxing is less painful than epilators. And waxing regularly stops hair from growing back so much.

Sounds like a perfect candidate for laser hair removal. Phillips Lumea is pricey but good.

Fazackerley · 18/04/2019 23:02

I did dd (15) armpits with my lumea. Did them twice and most of her hair has gone. No itchy regrowth is the best thing about it!

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 18/04/2019 23:03

It doesn't hurt at all - at first it feels a bit like (but less strong than) someone pinging an elastic band on your leg, like when you wear a hair tie around your wrist and ping it, but soon feels like nothing, really. It gets a bit hot after a while but the battery charge doesn't last long anyway so you probably won't get to that point.

thenightsky · 18/04/2019 23:06

Epilate. It only hurts the first couple of times, but you don't end up up with horrible black dots like shaving.

wiltingflower · 19/04/2019 01:06

I have dark coarse hair and favour epilating. Results last a while and over time hair growth slows/ doesn't happen (or at least that's what I've found).

Waxing and hair removal cream has never worked for me- hair is too tough and won't budge.
