cruise ship tap water is chlorinated ...

... what will it do to my coloured hair??? which I need to at least wet in the morning to get it to behave. Hair is curly, naturally dark, my colour is a chocolatey brown. I use mostly conditioner, very rarely shampoo.

Hairdresser says stay away from chlorine, but cruise brochure says ship tap water is chlorinated and drinkable. Will showering a couple of times a day be enough to ruin the colour? Anything I can do to minimise the damage?

Unless you live in the Netherlands, your drinking water and therefore shower water contain chlorine too.

All drinking water in the U.K. is chlorinated.

I think your hairdresser means swimming pools, which have much higher levels of chlorine than tap water.

I think that water which is safe enough to drink is OK to use on your hair...

Thanks all, that's reassuring.

I've been on several cruises. My hair is coloured, and I wash it every day whilst I'm away. I take my normal shampoo and conditioner, styling products etc, and I've never had a problem. I counter-balance the breezy sea days with a leave in conditioner which I use every other day.

Chlorine is the most common method of disinfecting water - most drinking water in the UK and around the rest of the world is chlorinated. So the water you shower in daily as it is has chlorine in it. As PPs have said, water safe to drink is not going to do your hair any harm at all. Your hairdresser will be referring to the hair damage and colour damage caused by heavily chlorinated water found in swimming pools. Even then, unless you’ve just had your hair coloured in the few days before going, a dip in a pool won’t do you much harm either!
