Partial face paralysis from Botox

Helpneededforsis1 · 13/04/2019 12:50

My sister received some Botox from a reputable dr 3 days ago . She got a conservative amount in her forehead. She woke up the next morning and her face felt very slack on one side. I thought she was exaggerating but she looks as though she has had a stroke. Her mouth is slack on one side and I e of her eyes is sort of dragged down. Her speech is also affected. To say she is freaked out is an understatement.
Has this happened to anyone here and if so how long could it go on for.? She has contacted her dr but there isn’t much they can do , it should wear off. I have looked online and read some horror stories of this being permanent.

how does having botox in your forehead affect the rest of your face and your speech? I would go and see a doctor just to make sure everything is ok.

FaithInfinity · 13/04/2019 12:55

She needs to seek medical attention! It could have triggered a Bell’s palsy?

Helpneededforsis1 · 13/04/2019 12:57

Looking online it does say that Botox can cause speech difficulty in the allergan side effects. There’s information about it causing Bell’s palsy but can’t get any solid information on this, is Bell’s palsy permanent? She’s going to see an out of hours dr

You don't know what has caused this, she really needs to see a doctor as soon as possible, we are not able to diagnose her here. hope she is ok.

3luckystars · 13/04/2019 13:03

It might a coincidence or she might have actually had a stroke, definitely see a doctor today.

Chewbecca · 13/04/2019 13:05

She does need to see a Dr.

But it is fairly likely to be the Botox, I know someone who has it on the NHS to stop a twitch to the side of the eye. Her face and mouth on that side of the face has dropped as a result and stayed that way for months.

Isawthesignanditopenedupmyeyes · 13/04/2019 13:06

This happened to me. The Botox migrated and it took almost 10 months to fully recover. I did go back to the doctor who did it but there was nothing to be done (got my money back).

smurfy2015 · 13/04/2019 13:11

This happened to me too. It migrated and went down one side of my throat, my swallow was affected for several months until it wore off. My botox was as a migraine treatment and obviously stopped at that point.

As her speech is affected, there is a possibility that this may be a stroke which is a coincidence in time rather than the botox.

Good luck and get her to see a dr

*maybe something separate

I heard Brix Smith-Start describe exactly this happen to her after Botox. Apparently it took about three months for her face to recover. She decided never to have it again. I decided never to have it.

SavageBeauty73 · 13/04/2019 16:04

She needs to see a Dr ASAP! That's scary

roundligament · 13/04/2019 16:05

Contact consultant clinic for advice

gubbsywubbsy · 13/04/2019 16:06

And that is why I would never have Botox ... this happened to my friend.. awful!

bonzo77 · 13/04/2019 16:15

She does need to see a doctor. But it’s likely to be the Botox. This is a foreseeable but unusual consequence Which should have been mentioned during the consent process. A colleague of mine gave Botox to another colleague and this was exactly the result. It did resolve within 6 months.

Helpneededforsis1 · 13/04/2019 17:10

Thanks for the messages , it isn’t a stroke and hopefully temporary. It is all pointing towards the Botox. It’s shocking tbh. Anti wrinkle treatment is common place now so she didn’t think much of it in terms of risk. In fairness the risks are written in black and white but always assumed it was more for the medical use of Botox in large amounts. I was also going to get it as going on holidays and wanted to look less haggard and fresh but dear God no.
For people who have experienced this, did it go back to normal again?

No experience of this but please contact the consultant clinic! The doctors there are absolutely incredible and very knowledgable about when Botox/fillers go wrong and can advise on the best course of treatment.

Also of course it’s advisable to visit her GP, but I have heard a horrible story about doctors not knowing how to treat a vascular occlusion caused by wrongly placed filler and the patient was unfortunately left with permenant damage because of the delay

Sadiesnakes · 13/04/2019 17:26

10 years ago my dm had Botox done between her eyes on the forehead. The nurse injector hit a nerve and she had bad bruising around the site immediately. Advised not to lean forward or lie down for the whole day. The next night she had a stroke and still hasn't regained the right side of her face, speech. Maybe coincidence but we were always suspicious of the Botox.

smurfy2015 · 13/04/2019 17:44

Yes, I went back to normal, however, it took several months for my face to stop drooping (6-8m) and my swallow thankfully came back right within 3 months. (it was a good diet for me tho) I had input from Speech therapy and various tests to rule out other causes but it was the botox in my case.

FaithInfinity · 13/04/2019 19:24

Bell’s palsy usually resolve on their own within a couple of months.

if she needs more advice, her dentist might know....I have major issues with grinding my teeth and botox was one of the suggestions for stopping it.

I said no, even though the teeth grinding gives me major headaches, because I thought the risks were too high. Dentist agreed he had seen a few patients with problems - anyway, maybe a dentist can help. Just a thought.
