8 year old fashion conscious

What pieces are trendy for an 8 year old at the moment? She's asked for some ripped skinny jeans and a belly top (very "big girl clothes" and the first time she's expressed an interest in fashion and what's popular) so what else would she be impressed with.

My drive here is not to turn her materialistic or the like, however she has been made fun of at school for being slightly overweight, and now someone's mentioned her clothes and i simply want to make her feel confident in herself and if some skinny jeans do it, I'm all for it!

So help! What brands are in? What's your 8/9year old wearing/obsessed with?

River Island
H&M
New Look

A good place to start is jeans. I quite like Next for skinny jeans but don’t get anything else there!

Think carefully about footwear too. Mine get a lot of wear out of Doctor Martens. You can wear them with a lot of things and of course they are incredibly comfortable and sensible at the same time.

I love some cute doc martens!! Are they in?! Are we talking classic boot type or more of a shoe??

I'm so clueless, never really paid attention to it because she hasn't before I suppose

Or even

Don’t panic at the price as they are always top dollar on the DM website compared to elsewhere.

My dc grew up in another country where clothes weren’t really talked about and when we came back I felt like I had to kit them out from scratch so they didn’t feel any more different than they already did. I don’t think it’s a bad thing and they still look like children.

My 8 year old lives in black leggings and a pair of Vans, usually teamed with a sweatshirt or hoodie.

JD Sports, River Island & New Look all have grown up kids clothes. Some items are a bit OTT though.

I’d say that what’s ‘in’ various hugely from area to area. What are the young teens wearing roundabout where you are?

Lemonsqueasy · 12/04/2019 16:14

Be careful buying Doc Martens cos they're so uncomfortable at first she might never wear them in!

Zara and mango both have lovely clothes for that age, cool but age appropriate. The sizing is on the small side though. J crew have good girls things too.

My daughter 8 has vegan docs they are uncomfortable to begin with but once broken in they are brilliant.

poorbuthappy · 12/04/2019 17:29

2 of my daughters have DMs - neither had to be broken in!

My 8yr old can wear a couple of bits from the age 9 New Look range- a lot of it comes up really big though.
Hype do 7-8 yr stuff which is ok for size.

It’s a tough age cos stuff is either too grown up or too babyish.

FlorenceLyons · 12/04/2019 19:34

My 12 year old wears skinny jeans, slim joggers or leggings on the bottom. On top she loves this style of T shirt - m2.hm.com/m/en_ie/productpage.0731817002.html - with a hoody on top. Shoes are trainers - favourites are Adidas or Vans.

sirmione16 · 13/04/2019 08:46

@BiggFactHunt that's the issue I think I'm having too, looking at it there's stuff which I wouldn't let her wear until she's at least 12, but then other stuff she'll see as babyish. I think I'll get her a couple pieces but also take her shopping with me soon

H&M is a good start judging from my best friend's 8 year old!
Let her have a wander and pick a few bits and then you can decide the final picks together!
