Is viscose sweaty??

Looking for summer tshirts. I usually go for cotton but they tend to lose their shape after a few washes. Anyone tried the Warehouse ‘Smart tshirt’ range? They’re 96% viscose, look like they hang well but wouldn’t that be super sweaty??! Not exactly the kind of thing you can test out without buying.

Yes.

GrandmistressGlitch · 09/04/2019 22:34

Damn. Thank you for your honesty!

Yes and it smells awful when it gets sweaty too. Hate how common it is in clothes these days.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 09/04/2019 22:37

No

It is a weird fibre, it's chemically processed wood pulp to create an artificicialsilk-type fibre

It's also called Rayon

It is totally breathable and not sweaty

Unlike Polyester and acrylic which are essentially plastic

Tortadellanonna · 09/04/2019 22:39

It doesn’t make me sweaty, polyester and acrylic do

GrandmistressGlitch · 09/04/2019 22:41

Hmm conflicting opinions... I know I have one viscose top which makes me feel like I’m at a job interview every time I wear it (hot and anxious) but I wasn’t sure whether it was because it’s cheap.

I've always been fine with viscose and I'm a bit of a sweaty Betty.

Anything polyester has me uncomfortably damp and smelly by the end of the day, even polycotton but viscose is OK.

AwdBovril · 09/04/2019 22:47

I don't think it is. I don't sweat a lot though. Polyester makes me sweaty, but viscose/bamboo is fine.

thenightsky · 09/04/2019 22:49

Viscose is fine - I think its processed wood pulp, so more natural than polyester, which smells of sweat very quickly.

toucantoo · 09/04/2019 22:50

Viscose is a natural fibre .... sort of. It's generally not sweaty. Breathes well but can stretch when damp

BillywigSting · 09/04/2019 23:06

Is your top 100% viscose?

BitOfFun · 09/04/2019 23:17

Is this article useful?

yellowsun · 09/04/2019 23:21

I get sweaty and am fine with it.

starbrightnight · 09/04/2019 23:28

Viscose is not sweaty. Yes it's a man made material but made from natural fibres.

Generally I love viscose, it feels nice on the am

starbrightnight · 09/04/2019 23:29

Oops. Feels nice in the skin and drapes well.

thenightsky · 09/04/2019 23:38

Yes, it looks nice because it drapes so well, compared to cotton.

SteelRiver · 09/04/2019 23:57

I've never noticed feeling sweaty or uncomfortable when wearing viscose.

Milliy · 10/04/2019 01:46

I feel clammy and sweaty in Viscose compared to cotton/linen.

managedmis · 10/04/2019 01:49

Hmm, I never realised the difference between polyester and viscose

Molecule · 10/04/2019 02:22

Viscose is 50% more absorbent than cotton. It is made by dissolving wood pulp in a solution of sodium hydroxide, then pushing it through tiny holes into sulphuric acid, which basically then forms the fibres.

I know this as I used to be involved supplying some types of machinery to viscose plants. It is (or was, I’ve been out of the industry for years) a very damaging and polluting process.

It comes under many names (such as model) and because I’m no longer involved I don’t know how environmentally bad they are, the higher quality fibres I imagine are produced in the most up-to-date factories, but there are still plenty of lower grade plants producing fibre for sanitary wear, most tampons are made from viscose because of its absorbency.

Whether it has the moisture wicking properties of cotton and linen I can’t comment on, but it will certainly absorb your sweat.

Time40 · 10/04/2019 02:23

Yes, it is a bit sweaty. It's not that nice (although it's true that it's better than polyester).

StarlightLady · 10/04/2019 06:29

I’m fine with viscose, l don’t find it sweaty, it has a bit of stretch, creases less when packed, keeps its shape and washes well. The fabric also seems to retain perfume smells which is a good thing.

It’s good for knickers (with cotton gusset) too, no baggy bum!

gerispringer · 10/04/2019 06:36

I’m a dressmaker and woven viscose is not a sweaty fabric, it can crease up more easily but it is actually light and cool to wear and fine for floaty dresses and anything wide and gathered. As others have said it’s made from cellulose, plant material. The main downside, like many fabrics, is the industrial process to make it is very pollluting, although I believe that is being addressed. I would buy viscose fabric and clothing but never polyester which really is horrible and sweaty and damaging to the environment at all stages.

EdithWeston · 10/04/2019 06:38

I don't find viscose (processed wood fibre) at all sweaty.

Polyester, (a type of plastic) I can barely wear , unless the weave is unusually loose.

BikeRunSki · 10/04/2019 06:39

Viscose can be made from bamboo (amongst other woods). I have lots of bamboo socks, pants and T shits from BAM clothing, and they are not at all sweaty.
