Babyliss big hair and an incompetent/incapable user with shoulder length hair - is it worth it

Hi

I was at my SIL this weekend and she was using a big hair styler thing and it looked easy. But she only had one with a really big brush and that would be too big for my hair,

I have chin length, lifeless, very fine hair with layers. Best I can do normally is shove some mousse on it and go for the tousled look. This is because:

  1. I am incapable of using straighteners or tongues - I'm 43 and have been trying on and off since a teenager. I just can't get it.
  1. I can't blow dry my hair - probably for the same coordination reasons I can't do (1).
  1. I'm not willing to devote a lot of time to faffing in the morning but am prepared to give 10 minutes or so if it makes a big difference to the rats tails I call hair.

I've recently decided to make an effort to defrump myself and stop looking like a bag lady.

AS a result I'm thinking of getting this:

The two sized barrel makes me think it will last as I grow my hair.

Is it worth investing in or would I be chucking money down the drain?

OP your hair sounds rather like mine. If so you have my sympathies.

DD has a proper Big Hair, which is great on her strong long hair. For Christmas she bought me the Big Hair petite, which Argos also sell. Have a look at it. It is easy enough to use, if you can manage to learn which way round the two buttons are (one spins the brush one way, the other the other way). The brush is just slightly too big to really style my hair yet but it certainly smooths it and makes it look quite shiny. I just go over it a bit with a hot brush afterwards for the styling. Am hoping to grow into it.

I've been using a Big Hair since they first came out - I'm on my fourth one now - the new one is massively better than the old one. My hair's a chin length bob and the brush isn't too big. I swear by it.

I love my Big Hair for creating volume. There are smaller barrels, but it’s the spinning action that makes the difference.
You need to use it on almost dry hair, you should still some kind of heat protection.
I find it good for volume at the roots, but if you want really shiny/sleek finish then you’d need to run something over it afterwards. The hot air come out between the bristles, so you don’t get the same cuticle smoothing effect you get from a barrel brush+hairdryer where you can direct the air down the hair shaft. I always end up with voluminous but slightly fluffy hair!

I have the same type and length of hair as you - I would definitely recommend it. I would choose this now over a hairdryer if forced to pick just the one.

Ideally - rough dry v quickly w hairdryer first to get some volume into the roots, then if you only spend 10 mins use the Big Hair on the front and at the crown. It really makes a difference.
Mine broke (I think it got water on it) and I only lasted 2 days before buying my next one.
The big barrel isn't a problem for me and i find hairdryer + round brush much much harder to use

Thanks all

I actually don't mind fluffy hair..... the last thing I want is sleek hair with no volume. I'm fat. Poker straight hair I can do without any aids - its called leave it and brush it.

My hair is so fine I probably don't even need a drier first....... when its getting cut, the hairdresser has to re wet it before she even gets half way around - and that's after a colour/wash!

A good towel dry then get dressed and my hair is probably dry enough that I could use it.

You could consider the Toni and Guy deep barrel waver. It does one massive wave per ‘press’ so it gives your hair some volume and interest without it looking like you’ve done much. It’s also very easy and the waves will stay in for more than one day.

Savoy wanted to say thank you for recommending the T&G barrel waver. I got one for £20 off Amazon and it is AMAZING. Ridiculously easy and has transformed my rather dull straight bob. I have had more compliments today than I got on my wedding day!

ILoveWillSmith · 10/04/2019 16:57

I swear by the Big Hair - I use it every day.
I am totally cak handed when trying to use a brush and hairdryer so find this much easier. Rough dry it first as others have said, only takes me 10 minutes then and my hair is bra strap length and thick. Good luck.

SavoyCabbage · 10/04/2019 21:37

It's so good isn't it Rinky!
