Curling hair

I have medium length, straight hair. I'm invited to a wedding as a guest in a few weeks. I don't go down the route of attending a hair stylist for events and I style my own hair.

I would like my hair in curls or wavy for the day. I'm not very fussy. What's the best way to do this?

I have a curling wand and I hate it. It's time consuming and even though I use a spray, the curls never stay.
I have a curling headband for nighttime and I hate it. I can do the front and the side of my hair easily with the band but the back turns into a mess. I find it never stays put over night and I wake and my head is a mess.
I have Velcro rollers and I hate them too. I just can't get the hang of them. It's so time consuming and it turns my hair into a frizzy mess.

So what's next?
I'm not a fan of plaits because the bottom of my hair is wavy and then the top is flat.

Sorry no real solutions other than to say I share your frustrations. Curling wands put lovely curls in..... but they drop out in about 5 minutes! I've heard the best way to get lasting curls is with a wet set using old-fashioned rollers, but like you all I get is a head full of frizz.

I guess if it's for a special occasion you could go to a professional? Not a great answer I know.

Have you tried Bayliss Perfect Curl? Very easy to use.

My hair's a similar length and I love my curling tong. I never used to get on with it but I've recently watched lots of the tutorials on The Small Things blog and it's really helped with my technique.

I also love heated rollers but I used them more when my hair was above my shoulders.

I think the best way is with straightening irons, I've been wearing my hair wavy for years and I've tried tongs and wands and always gone back to doing with straighteners.

I find that I have more control of how I want it to curl and the amount of waves or curls, its quicker and its sets better than tongs. I've even done it on a friend who has very silky straight hair and she was insistent that curls always drop out within an hour on her hair but it lasted all night.

It takes a while to get used to if you've not done it before and you might be a bit cack handed but look at some tutorials on YT and practice.

(ps ignore my username when I'm offering hair advice...I created it years ago when I was going through a phase of trying to get my hair lightened and it kept going wrong!)

I gave my hair straighteners away because I wasn't using them.

I took out the curling tongs last night to give it a try. I was reminded about how much I hate them. It took forever and no two curls or section of hair was the same. I managed to curl one section that I liked but the rest of the hair turned out different when I tried the same technique. No way will I have time to do my hair on the morning of the wedding using them tongs.

I bought two packs of them flexi rods online this morning. I bought large ones of 22mm because I don't want tight curls or look like I came from the 80s. Hopefully I will manage with them and hair turns out well.

Try day after hair wash hair too the shape will last better.

I'd use straighteners for curling, watch YouTube vids for inspiration and imagine "crocodile roll" whilst you're twisting and it works!
Wouldn't bother with the babyliss curl secret, I ended up with a load of frizz and it looks horrendous each and every time I've used it. Straightener curls are much smoother!

If you were thinking more wavy than curly, I use foam rollers on damp hair (make sure to tuck the ends in properly or they get super frizzy and crinkly), sleep in them, and the next morning I brush them out (and brush and brush and KEEP BRUSHING) and use some serum or oil to tame flyaways. YouTube has lots of tutorials as well for foam roller sets. My hair is super fine but the waves stay in quite a long time, and (I think) look quite glam. Good luck hope you find something that works for you!

I use heated rollers after straightening my hair to eradicate frizz.... time consuming .... lots of hairspray and serum - I do them quite tight then they drop to a nice ish level

I ordered a pack of flexi rods on Tuesday and they were delivered yesterday. I wanted to try them last night before the weekend to see how they are. Unfortunately I was working late and by the time I got free, I was wrecked. I did manage use them rods though. They weren't hard to use and they were quick to put in so I was very happy with them. I slept with them in overnight. It was ok. It wasn't very comfortable. The curls are still lasting now and I didn't use any styling spray.

I thiy what I might try for the weekend is to wash my hair early on Saturday afternoon and let it air-dry. I think I might go for the headband curler. I will use that for the front and side sections of hair. I always struggle with the back with the headband curler. I will use a flexi rod or two in the back of the hair. Thankfully the headband curler spongy bit in large in my headband and the flexi rods are large too.

Heated rollers are my go to. i have very fine hair and curls don't tend to hold. tried everything then recently got my heated rollers. Wash hair and blow dry to 90% then put the heated rollers in. i leave them in while i do my make up then undo and a quick spray. they are quite tight and boucy at first but I shake my head about a bit and then drop just enough to look a bit looser. I love them now!

I have natural curls and I think part of the problem is that tools are trying to recreate a shiny/smooth curl look that doesn’t exist in nature - my hair has a medium bouncy curl, but most of the time my curls look non shiny and a bit frizzy, because otherwise the hair wouldn’t be curling

What about a lovely French pleat or another updo?

SteelRiver · 11/04/2019 16:54

I use these spiral type rollers...
I put them in the night before, spritzing my hair with salt spray or a bit of mousse for hold, and sleep in them. When I take them out next morning, my hair is curly and so full of movement. I can then use my fingers to loosen them as much as I like. I find the curls/waves last all day, and I have gorgeous soft waves the day after, too.
