What to wear with a young baby

I'm due my second baby in a few weeks. Last time it was a good few months until I was back in my usual clothes. Breastfed my oldest and plan to again. What I wore last time is faded and bobbly and tbh never looked that great to begin with. On a budget as I'm on statutory mat pay.

Does anyone have some tips on comfy, cheapish, easy to feed in, but vaguely stylish outfits for the few months after birth?

Nothing black or dark coloured as it shows al stains. I think it’s harder with summer ahead as best under top is easiest for bf (for me) but layers are hard in the summer. Buttoned blouses and dresses might be best x

I have worn a few tops from Happy Mama. Not sure how stylish as they are badics really, but they are cheap! I've worn this a lot with leggings.

I would join the Can I Breastfeed In It Facebook group for ideas.

I also bought a B-shirt which I can wear under any top for feeding but it's getting warmer so not sure how practical two tops layered will be.

Basics not badics.

I didn't have much money for maternity clothes so just bought a pair of jeans, a pair of work trousers and a couple of tops and then picked out a few other bits I already had that went with these and would stretch. I've been wearing the same stuff again and again but it's been really cheap, easy and convenient having a capsule wardrobe so I'm planning the same for when baby arrives.

Going to get a couple of nice t shirts / tops and then cheap vests from Primark and just layer them for feeding. If I don't bf again I'm thinking of getting a few maxi dresses and just rotating all summer!

I would avoid jeans at first because of the constant leaks, spit up, spilling drink from tiredness - they take much longer to dry when you wash them. Get a few pairs of decent quality leggings, some long vest tops, and some drapey type cardigans to start off with?

My baby is sick a lot, I have many pairs or jeans from before I had her so once I was back in them I was glad to have to many.

I do "one up, one down" for tops atm, so most of my old tops are fine with the addition of £1.80 Primark vests (I remove the adjustable thing on the straps to make them more comfortable)

I second the happy mama tops. They do a double layered short sleeved t shirt that I wore loads last summer (baby born in August) with midi skirts and trainers. Felt good in those outfits and lots of midi skirts come with elastic waistbands so super comfy. Also jeggings with longish jumpers with open sided, they give really easy BF access with a vest underneath for colder days. This one is nice but you need to size down at least two dress sizes, it's very oversized.

I never owned a single item of nursing clothing. I used to do the “one up, one down” method, so I’d wear whatever top I wanted, with a vest underneath. Then lift the top layer up and pull the vest down enough to get a boob out and not flash my belly either.
H&M and new look basics for the vests and then whatever pretty tops took my fancy Smile

BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney · 05/04/2019 07:39

Oh I also got a nursing access maxi dress from Jojo Maman Bebe that I wore quite a bit. Was quite simple navy and white stripe but very nice. I also really missed wearing jewellery so I hit dome of those silicone necklaces which are great as give baby something to scratch at other thsn your boobs while feeding 😂 I got mine from Hexnex.co.uk

PeanutButterIsOneWord · 05/04/2019 08:12

Thanks!! Summer does make it trickier to layer.

I didn't think about skirts! I actually have some midi skirts with high waists that might fit over my belly after birth.

Going to stock up on drapey vests and a couple of pairs of jeggings in bigger sizes to go into once maternity leggings are too big. Also some nicer looking for short sleeve button up blouses / shirts to look a bit smarter.
