because basically i am a lazy sod who can't be bothered to walk up the rather steep hill to it from our indoor shopping centre (mothercare is on the outside part) i have only been there once since ds has been born!

i need to get ds some summer clothes and i have been in all my usual shops (zara, h&m, pumpkin patch) and am not overly impressed.

am i really missing out? are the clothes in there that great?

and will i be trampled all over my chavs running to get the last romper suit? that's why i never brave primark. every time i've been there it's been like watching bulls to a red flag and i just can't cope with it lol. i like my shopping trips to be a stress free and relaxing experience.

I would have said h&m and Zara would have been better.

I'm never all that impressed with Mothercare. The only time I buy from them is if I find a bargain.

LucyJones · 12/07/2007 11:07

I think Mothercare is a bit expensive tbh

chevre · 12/07/2007 11:08

i never darken the door or mothercare - v. depressing shop imo.

nappyaddict · 12/07/2007 11:09

depressing? what do you mean?

OP posts:
BettySpaghetti · 12/07/2007 11:15

I can't stand Mothercare -it tends to be my last resort and I'll only go in there if desperate.

When DD (7) was a baby everything in there had Winnie the Sodding Pooh on it which put me off, along with the fact its expensive and they insist on selling all sorts of stuff you really don't need but as a first time Mum you wander round and think to yourself "ooh looks like I need one of those"

chevre · 12/07/2007 11:18

depressing - the branding and lighting in teh shop is v. dated and dark. all the crap they sell that no one really needs. and the clothes are abit shite.

MrsBadger · 12/07/2007 11:21

dear lord I hate Mothercare
everything covered in syndicated characters

thehairybabysmum · 12/07/2007 11:27

Mothercare is generally a hideous experience but they do have some good baby/toddler clothes (baby boy anyway...i dont know about girls stuff though).

They usually have some bright coloures trousers, t-shirts rather than the beige/pastel drab shite that M&S next etc full of. You may have to rummage to avoid the winnie the pooh stuff though.

I do think there clothes are expensive but they often have half price sales and i do think there clothes are good quality...lined trousers, nice thick cotton for t-shirts etc.

In answer to your Q i would say worth a traipse but only if you ring first to see if a sale is on, think occasisional rather than regular visits i think.

Washersaurus · 12/07/2007 11:31

Gawd I hate mothercare with a passion!

I only go in there to buy PHP nappy soak as its the only local shop I can buy it from.

I always come out feeling depressed; the clothes are overpriced and not that nice IMHO, and the shop is generally filled with gobby inconsiderate women (staff AND customers I might add )

dobbysayswoof · 12/07/2007 11:34

I hate it too.

Even the giant ones in retail parks tend to look shabby, outdated, grubby, poorly lit - with overpriced stuff - and the clothes displays are always really messy.

Oh and they never have sizes.

Having said that, I got dd's cot and highchair in the sale.

nappyaddict · 12/07/2007 11:36

god i hate character clothing. i allow it on pjs though.

OP posts:
bozza · 12/07/2007 11:37

My friend says there is a really good sale in there just now. I rarely bother with it. The two that are most convenient for me to use are both closed due to flooding. I agree that the clothes are not displayed well. I would say prices are on a par with Next.

bozza · 12/07/2007 11:38

I allow characters on nightwear and underwear.

HolidayboundHorsewoman · 12/07/2007 11:42

The only things I have ever bought in mothercare were cheapo pushchairs.

Oh, and Dora slippers that DD2 couldn't live without.

The clothes are all either sugar pink or baby blue and almost all themed. Plus they're overpriced considering they are probably manufactured in sweatshops in China. Very generic and not very nice. And I agree about the hard-faced women in there (although the staff in the pushchair bit were actually very helpful)

francagoestohollywood · 12/07/2007 11:42

I find the whole mothercare experience quite depressing, tbh. And I don't like the clothes.

MrsBadger · 12/07/2007 11:45

Its sole virtue is it's better than Toys R Us. Just.

SpongebobControlpants · 12/07/2007 11:46

What am I missing, then? Must confess to shopping a fair bit in MC, due to it being the 'obvious' choice, but feeling strangely unfulfilled....

Don't have much money, so tend to buy baby clothes at Asda.

So where is good for fairly cheap but nice stuff? Am going off the very pink stuff, don't like the 'princess/angel/cutie pie' gear, so would like more unusual stuff.

HolidayboundHorsewoman · 12/07/2007 11:50

I don't agree, Mrs B.

I love toy shops of every description. Even Toys R Us whips me into a frenzy of toy-buying delight.

Gingerbear · 12/07/2007 11:53

Sainsbos and Tescos for cheap baby stuff, I also love H&M and when I am feeling flush, BabyGap or pumpkin patch (best when there is a sale on)

Gingerbear · 12/07/2007 11:54

Best thins from mothercare are plain cream or white towelling leggings (with feet in) that fit well over DS's huge bum (cloth nappies)

MrsBadger · 12/07/2007 11:57

Oh, I love proper toyshops, but Toys R Us gives me a migraine.
I think it's the combination of the light, the volatile chemicals coming off the plastics and the sheer size. Also the hard sell - I mean Tesco is bad enough ('Buy this product and your life will be better') but the 'this is THE ultimate toy' spin takes marketing to a new level.

HolidayboundHorsewoman · 12/07/2007 12:00

I miss the toy shop in the town where we used to live. It was crammed to the rafters with anything and everything. Whatever you wanted could be found in there.....somewhere. Sometimes it would take some finding!

I do get disproportionatley excited in toy shops - it's something I never grew out of!
