Those white, fatty lumps.Teenager, how to clear.

He edited this!

He's 17 and has these white, fatty lumps under his skin, both sides.

He has tried 'sticking a needle in them' with not much result.

As you can see, he also has cystic acne, though not too bad.

He wants some help with his skin. Who do we approach? A beautician? A dermatologist? (Yes, I know that would have to be private and cost ££). He wants rid of the white bumps.

I'll readily admit he's not great with me squeezing blackheads, etc, but he has asked for help with these.

Your input appreciated!

GP and ref to a derm.

dontgobaconmyheart · 31/03/2019 23:56

Why would it have to be a private dermatologist OP? I would just push the GP for a referral to a dermatologist for advice and treatment. The only issue that might drop up is that his acne is not severe enough to warrant one but from one image of a portion of a face it's hard to tell Smile. Usually they will refer if its affecting mental health and self esteem or the acne is scarring.

There will be a wait so in the meantime I would read up on appropriate skin treatments such as salicylic acid and BHA/AHA's to clear the skin and see if he finds a benefit from these. Otherwise book in with a private dermatologist or facialist and enquire about removal, they look like milia from the photos and poking about with a needle is only going to potentially cause infection or injury, they can be quite a way under the skin. Hope you can get it sorted!

Does he actually wash his face using warm water and a clean wash cloth every day? My ds's skin improves as if by magic just by doing that one simple thing. It helps shift the excess dirt/ oil from the skin and mildly exfoliates.

VanGoghsDog · 01/04/2019 00:03

Please tell him to stop sticking needles in his skin, especially near his eyes!

Hi the white bumps are millia if you go to your GP they should hopefully refer to a dermatologist or at least prescribe something for the acne
Regular exfoliating will help keep blackheads away

Aspirin face mask tends to bring some of mine out, I get them constantly where my glasses sit, so have a lovely inverted V either side of my nose. Bash some non coated aspirin with pestle and mortar, mix powder with teeny bit of water to form a paste. Apply lying down ideally, it doesn't stick. Leave for 10 mins and wash off. If I have some ready to go, this often is enough that they unclog on their own, or with a little poking.

yiskasha · 01/04/2019 00:34

It's milia! I had one by my eye years ago and one day I woke up and it was gone!

Letitbegin · 01/04/2019 00:43

YouTube a tutorial to get rid of milia removal at home you will wait forever for dermatology. But still go to gp for acne get antibiotics and if they don't work ask for a referral for dermatology. I've taken roacutane before cleared my skin for 3 years

BartonHollow · 01/04/2019 00:46

I have sebaceous hyperplasia which is similar

Whilst you are waiting to get a derm referral (they wouldn't treat mine on the NHS but they might for a minor)

La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo Cleanser (And maybe toner if he'll keep it up)

Some Konjac sponges and some Ordinary or Paula's choice Salycylic Acid

Charcoal masks

That should help in the interim

Miljah · 03/04/2019 13:09

Thanks, yes, it's the millia that are bothering him.

Make sure it's millia not syringoma. I have tiny syringoma bumps and nothing but a professional opening them up and removing the bump will get rid of them. And they will probably come back.

Miljah · 04/04/2019 11:40

That's a point. I might have to get them looked at!

I'm not sure if it's the best picture, but you can see the tiny syringoma here under my eye. They're paler than the skin, but not bright white like millia. Some of your DS's marks look white, others look like mine. I guess he could have both if he's unlucky!
