My eyes are allergic to every make up brand I've tried.

For the sake of clarity I have never been a consistent wearer of make up. I've tried off and on over the years but generally not keen on the feel of lots of make up on my skin so only wear it for occasions rather than day to day. Anyway I have landed myself a customer facing job and wondered if at the grand old age of 42 I should try again with make up.
I haven't started my job yet but I thought I would try some basic tinted moisturiser and mascara. But whatever I have tried my eyes always start to sting/feel sore after a couple of hours. This morning, I only used tinted moisturiser, tried to keep mostly away from my eyes and still two hours later my eyes are stinging and I feel like I need to go and wash my face.
Any suggestions? Anyone else struggle like this?

I struggle with eye makeup of all brands now.
Foundation wise I'm ok with maybelline and clinique. But I don't put it near my eyes at all.

Can you tolerate moisturiser and perhaps a adding a couple of tanning drops just to give your face a little bit of colour and even out skin tone?

Something like this

DeadZed · 31/03/2019 17:41

Usually fine with moisturiser, most brands in fact.

I thought I'd developed a mascara allergy last year but it was actually the remover, after years of being able to use everything under the sun I no longer can. I have to use tubing mascaras now which are removed with warm water. Worth playing around with to see if it works for you.

Chottie · 31/03/2019 17:53

I only use mascara which can be removed with warm water too and it's really made a difference.

I had dry, sore eyes and tried all sorts of over the counter drops and creams. The best solution for me has been no drops, no creams, just a little smear of vaseline over my eyelids and lashes every evening.

MoMandaS · 31/03/2019 18:00

Bare Minerals is the only brand I can tolerate. I don't like their mascara though so use Eyecare mascara, available on Amazon. I remove makeup with Biotrue wipes (also from Amazon).

picklemepopcorn · 31/03/2019 18:09

I agree with not using a base. When you wear eye make up on its own, do you still react?

I tend to wear eye liner or mascara and lipstick.

I've a bare minerals rose blusher I can use all over, if I happen to look a bit corpse like.

picklemepopcorn · 31/03/2019 18:11

Only use one product at a time until you are confident with it. And don't forget to be careful about removers. I don't actually use them, just water and a flannel.

Paddy1234 · 31/03/2019 18:20

I am place marking as I have recently become allergic to eye make up suddenly out of no where!

oreosoreosoreos · 31/03/2019 18:34

I'd highly recommend Neals Yard Remedies mascara. I've got very sensitive eyes and skin and Am fine with it.

If you do decide you want some tinted moisturiser then I like Moo Goo Earth Cream - again, it's very gentle and great on sensitive skin.

DeadZed · 01/04/2019 08:55

Thank you for all the suggestions.

I haven't tried just wearing eye make up but I will give it a go and see what happens.
I always remove with water and flannel, sometimes a little charcoal soap which my skin is usually good with.

I have the same issue. I’ve found I’m OK with L’Oreal foundation. I used to be OK with Maybelline but that makes the skin around my eyes very dry as well now!

Mascara wise, I have one that was a special buy from Aldi - Lacura I think! It was recommended to me & I love it.

I can only use very plain moisturisers on my body, Simple or Cocoa Butter etc. I swear by my Aldi caviar cream for my face though - the only one I’ve ever used which both moisturises enough and doesn’t bother my sensitive skin. It comes in a silver box, £6.99.

Elllllle · 01/04/2019 09:15

I'm better with foundations that "set" or don't transfer. Tinted moisturizers are terrible as they run straight into my eyes.

Likewise Im better off with waterproof mascara. Lrp is really good

mozzarellasticks · 01/04/2019 09:27

have you tried any hypoallergenic brands?

InglouriousBasterd · 01/04/2019 09:34

Have you tried no7? I had this severely a few years ago, terrible eczema around the eyes, but no7 was fine - started with mascara and added in slowly.

DeadZed · 01/04/2019 11:02

Yes, I've used No7 in the past. I do get a little eczema around my eyes in winter but nowhere else and it has only been a recent thing.

Do you recommend any brand in particular mozzarellasticks ?

Almay disappeared off the high street years ago. It was pretty much the only eye makeup I could tolerate for years. My sister used to have to get it for me from the US, however it’s available on Amazon. Anyway, I still use their eye shadows and liquid eye liner. I can now also tolerate some others...Mac and No7 eyeshadow, and double wear mascara.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/04/2019 11:26

Almay was great!

higgyhog · 01/04/2019 11:32

I presume you have tried Clinique? it is the only brand I can use. I don't wear much make up now as I had eyelash extensions . I was pleasantly surprised that I was not allergic when the skin test was done. There is no logic to it, just seems to make me look very different and better.

mozzarellasticks · 01/04/2019 11:39

@DeadZed I had a hypoallergenic mascara years ago (can't remember what brand for the life of me) when I thought I had an allergy to my mascara. Turns out it was actually my makeup wipes causing the problem! All I can recommend really is trial and error, we're all different so not everything works for everyone. I definitely recommend a quick Google for hypoallergenic brands, not sure what your price range is but you might find something suitable for yourself. Best of luck!

mozzarellasticks · 01/04/2019 11:41

@DeadZed I use Dr Organic Manuka Honey rescue cream for flare ups though! They sell it for about £10 at Holland and Barrett. Lasts forever and smells great

EKGEMS · 01/04/2019 12:07

I'm severely allergic to purple eyeliner any brand and I'm symptomatic for 48 hours despite prescription strength allergy eye drops and oral pills I feel your pain

StarJumpsandaHalf · 01/04/2019 12:11

I use a little smear of Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream on my lids at night. For makeup I have to be very careful and avoid anything illuminating or highlighting.
