I am dumpy but don't want to be frumpy! Where do I shop?

I am in my early 30s, I don't feel old at all and I certainly don't want to look frumpy.

However, as a Proper Pear (even more so since having DD) I have a small bust, wide hips and vast, vast thighs. My shoulders and upper arms are pretty chunky (tennis player arms as my Nana called them) and my waist is my smallest part. I also only 5ft4.

I feel like the high street doesn't offer youngish looking clothes for me that suit my body shape - everything that looks looks nice in topshop, Zara, Cos are all cut for non-pears or certainly people with smaller hips.

I love wearing clothes that are well cut and flattering but I don't want to shop in Boden and M&S as it's not my style Blush where can I find some great, well cut clothes that will will suit my shape but aren't dowdy?

Have you ever considered buying something and having it altered? Either buying something loose fitting and getting it nipped in at the waist or finding something that fits well on your bottom half and altering the top?

I think it would be fairly reasonable if you go to a local independent tailor, although I haven't done it myself.

I'm hourglass and have the same problem. I agree with a pp about having things altered

It's generally only around £10 an alteration, so I allow that on top of what I'm paying for something if I feel I might need to get it fixed. Most dry cleaners offer alterations too if you can't get a recommendation.

My ideas are
Reiss (obviously not all their cuts work if you aren't shaped like a stick. But some really do, don't write it off)
mint velvet (nicely cut, slightly interesting jumpers etc)
all saints (longer tops, layers)
j crew (preppy so things are quite tailored which is flattering if you pick right)
Monsoon if you can find pieces that work for your style

Happy shopping!

Oasis have some good dresses in for pear shapes, and their jeans are worth trying. The dresses are often sold in a choice of length too.

I have also recently bought high waisted jeans from new look (their Yasmin style) which are really flattering on my pear-like figure but they are a bit short in the leg (I'm 5'6) so they might work for you?

Steer clear of Zara, they make clothes for tall people with no curves!!

...actually the yazmin jeans in New Look come in 4 different lengths. I know it's a bit of a teenager shop but these jeans are the most flattering I've found for years!

Make the most of your waist with a Jersey wrap dress or skater dress. 3/4 sleeve jumpers highlight slim wrists and make arms look slimmer. Smart joggers from Next hide big thighs.
