Talk to me about the legendary Mumsnet Haircut

I've been spectacularly broke for the last few months, and very literally have no money spare for a haircut. My hair grows very quickly and is longer now than it has been in years, about shoulder-blade length. I'm noticing split ends, and I'd really like to just clean things up a bit. Plus, it's all one length (no fringe) and I'm thinking a little layering might make it a bit more interesting.

I'm thinking to do it in a long pony so that it's not too short or fringe-y, on Thursday evening. That way if it's truly horrible I have the day off on Friday to try to scrape together my loose change to try to have it fixed. But I'm hoping against hope that it turns out to be the free miracle cut I want it to be.

Any encouragement or reasons this would be an idiotic thing to do?

I’ve done it a few times and it was successful! You need hairdressing scissors though

Pinkkahori · 27/03/2019 14:26

I did it recently. I wimped out a bit and didn't cut much but it still left the front layers shorter than I wanted.

Rockbird · 27/03/2019 14:32

I've been doing this for 10 years now (eek). Just take it slowly, don't hack loads off at once and it'll be fine.

BaronessBomburst · 27/03/2019 14:39

I've done this several times and it's always worked out okay. In fact, once I even let DS
cut it for me; he was about 5 at the time and so excited he talked about it for weeks.
The trick is to brush your hair really thoroughly and pay careful attention to make the pony tail even. Don't put it too far back on your head either.

You'll look fab! Grin

TheQueef · 27/03/2019 14:40

Is it to one side? I fear I've been doing it wrong Grin

NorthEndGal · 27/03/2019 14:44

I've done it, it worked much better than expected, and even had a few friends decide to do it themselves

Lellochip · 27/03/2019 14:59

It always worked fine for me. Until that time it didn't... 😅

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 27/03/2019 15:00

I did this all the time when I had long hair, it was brilliant! The most important thing is that you do it a tiny bit at a time, you can always go back in and do more, but if you cut too much off you will be mulleted for the foreseeable future!

LuxuryWoman2018 · 27/03/2019 16:41

I’ve done it several times and was pretty pleased with it, first time I did the ‘unicorn’ ponytail but layers don’t really work with my hair, it was great for getting rid of every last dry end though. after that I did it from the nape of my neck so just the length. Asked a friend just to deal with any bits I’d missed.

Scattyhattie · 27/03/2019 19:52

If you've a college offering hairdressing courses nearby they tend to be open to the public in term time & cheap or some salons offer special rates to get models for training.

I tried the above unicorn method after bit of late night YouTube tutorials & front layers ended up being much shorter than rest Blush, so I then tried other method where bring to front of chest to redce gap between top layer & ends. Had to get friend to try level it all out for me.
Luckily I had long hair & it grows quickly so hacking off a load to try correct didn't matter too much.

poppym12 · 27/03/2019 21:05

I'd keep away from the pony tail haircut unless you'll be fine if it goes really wrong. Search for a video by Ellebangs on YouTube called 'east 4 point haircut '. It's foolproof and you can add a few layers at the sides more gradually than the ponytail way.

Lellochip · 27/03/2019 22:39

poppym12 Yep, ponytail in the wrong place and you've suddenly lost inches. I think there was the best part of a foot between my different lengths Confused

(Well if you're gonna fuck up, might as well do it spectacularly...)

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 27/03/2019 22:49

Christ don't so it, I looked like Billy Ray Cyrus for months after.

Are there any local colleges or training schools that do models for a proportionate price?
