Majirel help

Hi! Can anyone please tell me what else I need to buy alongside the tube of Majirel? A brush and bowl, but do I need to mix the tube with something or is it just that that goes into my hair? Thanks very much!

Hi op, you will need to buy peroxide to develop the colour. you mix at a 1:2 ratio with the colour so eg 30g of colour will need 60g of peroxide. If you are not requiring lots of lift, I'd go with 20 vol.

Thank you!! So is the peroxide just a standard one I can get on the Sally website? Like this one...

other tips: get a pal to help round the back; NEVER be tempted to apply heat to developing colour, remember colour can't lift colour so if you have colour already in your hair your results may be patchy. good luck and enjoy your hair.

MadameButterface · 27/03/2019 13:08

that's exactly the one we use, good call op :)

MadameButterface · 27/03/2019 13:18

oh! GLOVES. get them gloves on.

I definitely already have colour in my hair, dark brown. I've been using box dyes for years but I have bloody bastard grey hairs that are needing more and more frequent treatment and read on here how good Majire is so thought I'd try it. Thank you so much for your help!

on subsequent touch ups op, try and just do your roots to avoid colour build up and over processing your hair ( I don't know if you do this or not). this can be another reason why colour looks like it's not taking well on the roots - it is, it's just that it's built up on the lengths and so looks darker. dark build up on the length will also make your greys look greyer when they come through at the root. it's fine to save and reuse any unmixed colour and developer.

That's so helpful, thank you. I do tend to do all my hair even though it certainly doesn't need it, I think it's the "I shouldn't waste the mixture" attitude that I have. I'll just do my roots though for sure. How long can I save it for? Are we talking a week, or a month?

I'm interested in how long you can use tthe tubes after they have been opened as well actually. I used Loreal Dialight, the semi permanent and it was brilliant, but I only needed half a tube, so am I OK to keep the rest of the tube. I assume developer is OK to keep for a good while.

have a look on the packaging to see - obvs as we use them in a salon, they're not sat round for very long. There should be that little graphic that shows how long a product is ok to use after being opened. remember, you can always mix more up but you can't unmix it. you can also do your roots then add a little water to what's left for putting through your ends to stretch it - you don't really want to be going over and over colour. if you have areas that are noticeably greyer than others, eg temples, apply there first so it's on longest - grey hair takes a bit more covering up.

The dialight is absolutely dreamy stuff, as is the majirel - all l'oreal colours are really fab to use. I would always advise buy 20 vol from a Sallys though - the stuff that comes with box dye tends to be 40 vol, which is why you get a lovely intense result that goes a bit dull after a while - the harsher peroxide makes the hair very porous. I have been taught that it's less damaging to leave a 20 vol solution on for 40 minutes than 40 vol for 20 mins.

It's just arrived (Christ Sally's don't mess around do they!) and the bottle of peroxide is HUGE 😂. I was expecting a little one. I was going to do it tonight but I only have marigolds, so I'll pop out tomorrow for some more suitable ones. I've been dying my hair for 20 years probably but I'm really nervous!

Sorry OP could I just hijack for a minute to ask @MadameButterface a question...
I have a very thick head of hair and get foil highlights. It always goes brassy before I am ready to shell out for another head of highlights! despite me using the purple shampoo (I have been using the l'oreal professional one, bought in my hairdressers as recommended by her?) I'm wondering if this dialight toner would be a better option for me to use between highlights? I've noticed that I'm getting more and more grey hairs spring up at the roots - would it be ok to use this given the new grey growth and the very many bleach highlights?? Would I still need to use peroxide with it or do I just apply it on it's own? My natural colour has quite a lot of gold and red tones and my preferred colour is light blonde. I've got so much (honestly, sooo much) hair that even though my hairdresser takes ages to put in what seems like hundreds of foils, it seems like there's just too much hair to really lift it all so it looks great the first few weeks and then... not so much.

MadameButterface · 28/03/2019 17:21

hiya

blonde hair always goes brassy, no matter how much or how little you have, or how much you lift it, it will always go back brassy eventually. sad times :(

you can tone with dialight and you'll need to use peroxide yes. I would check with your regular stylist about this and which shade exactly to use because if your hair grabs too much ash it'll look murky. it's ok to ask these questions! we live in the real world and we know most people don't have half a day and £100 to spare every six weeks on the dot, and we'd rather give you our honest and sage advice than have people turning up having put all sorts of old shit in their hair and swearing blind they haven't Grin which absolutely does happen.

something else you could try to tide you over that has a bit more wallop than purple shampoo, and is less drying but that won't require peroxide is toning with something like Directions, Manic Panic or Crazy Colour. Get a lilac or a silver or platinum one of those and add a little bit to some white conditioner and sit with that on your hair and see if that gives you a better result than the purple shampoo. but again - ask your hairdresser! if your hair is porous it will grab on to colour like billy o.

if you are into the nitty gritty of the science around blonde hair and the struggle to maintain, I really recommend following @lisalovesbalayage on instagram. she is super honest and a colour genius.
