Do you think I can return an item if...

...it's too big after one day's (light) wear? Bought stuff from NEXT direct, and had to return most of it because it was far too big even though I exactly followed the measurement guide they give for sizing (not just the size itself, iyswim). Kept some shorts that seemed ok as they are a sort of stretch denim and had been cut for a closer fit. I have worn them for one day and now they have gone baggy around waist and hips and look horrendous - I could easily go at least one size down in them.

Does anyone think I can return them as faulty? I feel like it isn't my fault that they haven't followed their own sizing guidelines. Or should I just take the hit and just wear a belt with them..?

If they fit ok when you tried them on and they then stretched out to ridiculous proportions after one wear then I would agree they’re not fit for purpose. May as well ask customer service if they’ll accept a return. If not then I would chuck or eBay though as a belt isn’t going to help much if they’re a full size too big.

Have they really stretched that much from one wear? I would guess they didn't fit before you wore them for the day, in which case no you can't return them

vinegarqueen · 27/03/2019 03:28

They honestly did fit - I really wish I'd taken a ”before” picture Grin for mn judgement. They seemed a comfy fit - not loose but not tight. I don't wear a lot of denim that has a stretch in it so maybe I should have expected that on a first wear they should have felt more snug..?

Ugh I hate this! This has happened to me too, but with jeans and trousers, and at least twice (M&S and Uniqlo - cheap but still annoying). They fit when I put them on and then stretch out until they look huge within an hour or two's wear. I've never considered returning them, just took the hit and donated.

ThroughASashWindow · 27/03/2019 05:41

Wash them on a high temp and then tumble dry them..they will shrink a bit.

Jojoanna · 27/03/2019 06:07

I would probably take them back

vinegarqueen · 27/03/2019 06:45

UPDATE: Victory is mine! Just got in touch with customer service (tbh still feeling a bit like a CF)and they were super nice about it and will let me return them for a full refund!!

That's brilliant. I think denim stretching is a bit of a grey area, since you should expect them to stretch but sometimes it is a ridiculous amount.

For future - with denim once I think I've got the fit right but before I take tags off - I do a few lunges, squats and bend over a couple of times - that's normally enough to tell if they are going to stretch massively and go saggy or snap back and hold their shape.

I had a pair of cigarette trousers from h&m that looked lovely after washing, but only for about 15 minutes, also a pair of trousers from M&S. They just go all baggy and hideous. Sent them to Oxfam.

chickenalapesh · 27/03/2019 17:43

I used to work at next back in the day. People could return anything!!! I remember one stinky CF return some flared jeans (like when no one would ever wear a skinny jean) and the bottom at the back had worn away with being stood on. I wasn't having any of it until she wanted to speak to management and was told to put it through 🙄

Customers always right ;)

Ellapaella · 27/03/2019 17:46

In my experience Next denim always does this which is why I don't buy jeans there anymore. If after one days wear they have already gone baggy then ask for a refund.

MikeUniformMike · 27/03/2019 17:50

I found this with Uniqlo jeans.
M&S jeans - hmm... I'm normally an 8, bought size 6 to allow for their generous sizing and they're too big.

vinegarqueen · 28/03/2019 05:07

@chickenalapesh a couple of my siblings have worked on returns desks and have told hideous stories, including the one about a woman who tried to return used knickers which were from a different shop. But I'm still always amazed when I am allowed a refund. I once returned jeans to Peacocks as I found a giant hole in the inseam when I tried them on - they just put them straight back on the same rack for another sucker.
