Hair dye washing out, hair too porous?

Does anyone have any advice, I’ve been to numerous hairdressers and nothing works. To cover my greys one hairdresser prepigmented the grey before putting the dye on because it just shines right through the dye and lasts me about 2 weeks if I’m lucky before it starts showing but I can see it lighter from first getting it dyed. Not sure if that made much of a difference either. The rest of my colour washes out quickly meaning I can’t just get roots done as such and need a full colour done each time as the rest of the colour is washed out and ends up much lighter. It’s costing me a fortune trying to upkeep and two weeks later im back to embarrassed with my grey shining through, I can’t always get the time to go to hairdressers either as I have two DC so it’s becoming so annoying when it hardly lasts me long.

Do you know the formula you’ve had applied? The grey hair shining through vs your midlengths and ends fading for me would be two separate issues and formulas.

I don’t unfortunately. I’ve explained this to hairdressers a few times and all they’ve recommended is the pre pigment before hand and then just told that the greys must just be too white and there’s nothing they can do. Other hairdressers cover it from dye but then again after next to no time it’s shining through again

Have you tried to wash your hair with cold water? Hot water can take colour out your hair.

Mummylou83 · 03/04/2019 20:25

I’ll give that a go. Thank you

Have you tried a shampoo for coloured hair. Someone on another thread recommended a good one, I will try to find it. At least don't use anything harsh. Washing in lukewarm to warm should be ok, cold water would probably be too cold, plus won't clean hair properly. If you still can't find a solution, what about embracing the grey. What do you envisage it would look like?

Can't find the thread yet OP, but will come back if I do. What I meant about embracing the grey is using it to your advantage if colouring becomes a chore, or going blonde, which will be easier to disguise the grey.

My hair is porous and I can happily wash out permanent dye like semi permanent.

Highlights and shea butter helps keep my hair strong.

COuld the washed off colour just be your new hair growing through because mine is noticeable in a week and by two it is a quarter of an inch.

It is such a hassle I am thinking about stopping the dye. Have you looked at the grombre Instagram page?

Have you tried not washing your hair for 48 hours after it is coloured. I read somewhere that the colour takes better if you can leave it.

If you've done a lot of 'stuff' to your hair in the last year or two then yes, fading dye is normally a result of the hair being too damaged to hold on to colour.
My hair is very bleach damaged and there is a clear line where the current brown dye in my hair is much darker from roots till about my ears, and then lower down where it's much more faded and that's where the hair that was previously bleached is.
Avoid reds, they fade awfully, browns do too, but not as much as reds...

I'm exactly the same op and I really hate it, every two weeks my hair needs dying I did go lighter for a bit and was getting about 4-5 weeks out if it which was better but also costing me a fortune and time in the hairdressers getting foiled highlights

Hi, I do use shampoos designed for coloured hair, at my last appt the hairdresser said perhaps I’m not using the correct shampoo but it was a semi expensive one for brunette coloured hair. She suggested another shampoo convinced it was the answer to my prayers so I bought the products recommended from her and still have the same issue.

I think partly it’s my hair growing back but even after next to no time I can see it shining through and the colour slips from the rest of my hair too, my hair is brown but by 2 weeks later it has a red tint from the dye with red undertones that’s in the brunette dyes I’ve been told from the hairdresser but for other people the brown sticks but for me it doesn’t.

I’m only in my early 30s so didn’t really want to embrace grey just yet. Good to know other people are the same because my friends just can’t understand it and don’t have this issue, I guess it’s just my hair n that’s that unfortunately.

Thank you for everyone’s replies

This is why I had to embrace the grey!

I started gong grey in my early thirties (my father's genes) and for ages people thought I had highlights. Maybe leave your hair alone for a while, let it recover and then possibly try colour again.

What brand of colour does hairdresser use

Yewtown · 04/04/2019 09:05

I think it might be your shampoo. The one for brunettes is not the same as shampoo for coloured hair. The brunette shampoo is designed to make brown hair more shiny whereas the coloured shampoo prevents the colour fading quickly. I find goldwell shampoo really good on my hair. I get it from amazon or TK Maxx occasionally.

I would try ditching the shampoo completely, using silicone and mineral oil free conditioners to wash.

Look up the Curly Girl method of conditioner-only washing. Ignore all the stuff about curly hair and masses of products, and just take their lists of ingredients to avoid.

Basically the principle is to do one final wash with a shampoo containing sulphates but no silicones (to wash out any mineral oil or silicones) and then wash with conditioner only from then on, taking care to use ones with only water-soluble ingredients (ie no silicones or mineral oils).

Your hair will be perfectly clean, far better condition, and your dye will last longer as it won't be washed out by the harsh shampoos.
