Looking for a deep conditioner/treatment that actually works and doesn't cost silly money

My hair is fine, but long and thick and is suffering from winter dehydration. It looks dull and in need of Tlc.
I used to put oil on it once a week but even that isn't cutting it anymore.
Any recommendations for products that will actually work?

Pantene Pro-V 1 Minute Rescue Ampoules.

BigButtons · 18/03/2019 17:17

I have lots of ACV i’ll Give that a go 🙂.
Aussie is cheap too and easy to get hold of!

You need 50:50 ACV and water or you can use green tea or camomile( for blondes).

I've just been sucked into the weird world of no poo/ low poo.

This week I did a homemade aloe Vera gel mask (just scrape the middle out of leaf and blend with water or you can buy ready made in Holland and Barrett ) for an hour before washing with a sulphate free shampoo bar, cold water rinse and then spray liberally with ACV and green tea and leave in.

My hair is so soft I can't stop touching it.

Also had very good results with a mask I made with banana, 1/2 avocado, TBs honey, two egg yolks and a tbs sweet almond oil. Again leave for an hour and rinse out, then condition with acv.

Make sure you blend it well though- turns out it's really hard to get tiny lumps of banana out of your hair 😂

@fluffylittleclouds and @ILikeyourHairyHands can I have a link to the exact mask please?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 18/03/2019 22:26

Yes! It's this one Thedarklady.

Heismyopendoor · 18/03/2019 23:12

I like doing a homemade-ish treatment of my regular conditioner mixed in a bowl with olive oil, 50:50 ratio. Then I apply all over my hair plop my hair on top of my head and wrap in cling film and then a towel for at least an hour. Works well for me.

I’m oersonally not a fan of silicones, parabens, sulphates, drying agents etc. I have also stopped blow drying and straightening my hair and my ends look amazing. Before every time I would straighten them it was like straw :(

My favourite is Aussie 3 minute miracle

slinkysaluki · 19/03/2019 07:33

Coconut oil saturated hair left overnight and shampoo out in morning excellent

Alwayscheerful · 19/03/2019 09:48

I am surprised no one has mentioned Philip Kingsley elasticiser?
use as before a normal shampoo and conditioner. Preferably overnight.
Amazing product.

UpToonGirl · 19/03/2019 09:51

Can anyone link the loreal mask? I'm looking but there are a few serie expert masks, I'm always in the market for a good hair mask!

I used to have elasticiser. Liked it a lot but it is bloody expensive.

I’ve just started washing with conditioner only as my hair was getting dry and frizzy. It looks so much better.
I saw some ‘no poo’ articles and thought I’d give it a go.

RockyFlintstone · 19/03/2019 10:17

Yes don't bother with the Superdrug own brand olaplex stuff. I had quite high hopes, with all the scientific guff and the 3 step ritual of doing it. It was..... OK. I will prob go back to the Aussie 3 min miracle.

I did find coconut oil was good, but then I read something about oils not being good for the hair as they actually create a barrier for moisture. Or something. Who bloody knows!

AWaspOnAWindowReturns · 19/03/2019 10:48

Agree with @slinkysaluki - my frazzled overbleached hair was saved by cheap coconut oil from B&M (warm it in the microwave for 30secs to melt, work it right the way through, wrap in cling film/shower cap, leave for as long as possible or overnight, shampoo and condition as usual). I repeated this 2-3 times a week until the tub ran out. Much better than any expensive deep treatment I've ever bought.

KoraBora · 19/03/2019 11:00

When you do the apple cider vinegar rinse is it just for the final rinse or do you rinse it out of your hair with water?

ILoveMaxiBondi · 19/03/2019 12:29

Kora I put the ACV in my hair after shampooing but before conditioning. Then put conditioner on top of it and let the lot sit while I washed myself/shaved legs etc. Then rinse the lot out and once it’s out I did a blast with cold water.

GlossyTaco · 19/03/2019 12:38

I had dry hair after pregnancy and saved it by giving up my straighteners , using Maui shampoo and conditioner and having lots of it chopped off. It's growing beautifully now.

I'll echo what pps have said about more natural shampoos , I tend to use curly girl approved products for this reason even though I wear my hair blow dried straight.

RuggyPeg · 19/03/2019 12:48

This is the loreal mask. I got it from look fantastic but it's out of stock at the mo. www.lorealprofessionnel.co.uk/hair-care/absolut-repair-lipidium/mask-masque

GlossyTaco · 19/03/2019 12:49

Also op , I tried a couple of treatments before I just went for the change of routine mentioned above. I don't think there's ever really a quick fix for dry hair , anything that claims to be is either temporary , coats your hair with something to give the appearance of health or both of the above.

ivykaty44 · 19/03/2019 12:55

Go to the supermarket and purchase a bottle of olive oil - no need for virgin. Buy a shadower cap and go home, smoother olive oil over your hair, then pop the shower cap on and sit somewhere warm for a couple of hours. Wash out, wet hair put shampoo in hands and rub together then rub over hair and wash as normal.

BigButtons · 19/03/2019 12:56

Thanks so much everyone. I use faith in nature shampoo as my scalp really complains if I use normal shampoo . I wash my hair twice a week and hardly use straighteners.
I have thought about co-washing a few times but it seemed a bit complicated??

I’ll try oiling again. I used to do it regularly but coconut is really hard to get out so I use different oil blends. Smile

Olive oil works well too
