Dressing for Inverted Triangle Body Shape

chapthedoor · 16/03/2019 18:57

I have this body shape - broad shoulders with big boobs but my hips are quite narrow and I have a flat bum. I always thought I was an hourglass but I was looking at a full length picture of myself (wearing a t shirt and skinny jeans) and my body just gets narrower the further down it goes.

How would I dress for this ? I like wrap dresses/tops and always wear a v or scoop necked top due to huge boobs. Does anyone else have this shape ?

I do and am going to the gym currently so shoulders getting bigger and hips leaner.
I like more tailored slim fit clothes.
I've got chunky calves so skinny trousers don't suit. Straight leg shape.

cad186 · 16/03/2019 20:13

Yes I'm this shape too. I find it a very difficult shape to dress. I find sleeveless v neck tops look best. I think wrap dresses are good too. Finding suitable tops or dresses is very difficult, I tend to find tops in oasis, warehouse or dorothy perkins.

cad186 · 16/03/2019 20:14

Also I find it really hard to find a jacket/blazer that doesn't make my top half look huge so if anyone has got any suggestions I would be grateful to hear them! Thanks!

QueenMabby · 16/03/2019 20:26

For a blazer I would go for longer line, narrow lapels, no shoulder padding and single breasted. Anything that draws the eye down rather than across. Also, maybe a fluid fabric rather than stiff. Maybe even an edge to edge style with no buttons?

This is me!! Watching for tips as I find it so hard to look feminine with this shape

chapthedoor · 16/03/2019 20:26

Thanks I do like Oasis, not been in Dorothy Perkins for years I'll pay it a visit.

Jackets are difficult ! I bought a belted trench coat from M&S which I think looks good. Nothing too short or boxy.

I have 'muscular" calves too. For work I've been wearing ankle length slightly wide leg trousers

Watching with interest as well. I've the same body shape, and agree it's a challenge to dress, particularly to look feminine and elegant.
I really like flared jeans/ trousers. They seem to balance out the broadness of my top half whilst showing off my slimmer thighs/legs. I'm quite lucky that I'm tall, 5.9 and very long legs. It all helps countetact the short stocky body!

As for jackets I agree with the poster above, long line with slim or even no lapels seems to look best. I recently got a nice black work one from rocher at Debenhams which had inverted lapels. So sits slightly proud on the neck with two little cut outs facing in. I just checked and it's not online any longer.

Other thoughts and tips appreciated!

I want to find dresses that when they fit on the shoulder, the aren't huge on the hips.
Anyone?

TipseyTorvey · 17/03/2019 08:41

I have this shape and had a style day. She measured me all over and told me the right length and style of things to wear. I have the additional problem of no waist and a chunky tummy shape so it's tricky but I now have a bit of a uniform of shorter fitted blazers that nip in a bit at the waist and slim trousers with a v neck blouse for work and out of work I wear a chiffon blouse over a vest with v necks etc. Lots of scarves tied to create that v neck also. I'm very short though so a lot of it's about using one colour to stretch me out and stuff like that.

chapthedoor · 17/03/2019 10:26

I'm quite tall - 5ft 8 - but I think that makes the broad top half look worse.

I don't have any dresses that are tight on the hips they all fall quite loose. Maybe a body con type dress ? But I don't like my tummy so I avoid them like the plague !

Hi Same shape here!
No to body con!! A line or straight skirt best. Do you have a waist? I don't Confused
So I avoid anything waisted, unless empire line. Agree sleeveless and mono colour lengthen. Soft jersey blazers for jackets.

chapthedoor · 17/03/2019 10:55

Oh yes empire line - I used to have a few top of this style and the suited me but it seems to have gone out of fashion.

I do have a waist but my hips don't go out much from it, not as much as my chest anyway. I have a couple of a-line skirts that look good with a top tucked in, gives the illusion of a waist. Going to get a denim a-line mini for summer

That video link is very helpful. I have this shape and find baukjen tops good and straight leg jeans . My shoulders are wide and I'm a 16 on top but 14 on the bottom. Also no waist. Dresses are the hardest to find ime

TheBitterBoy · 17/03/2019 12:03

Further to that video link, Justine Leconte has a whole series on dressing for your shape, she's really good www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9e2viG3AuRML-wHc5hDJN-d7YwrSYLuE

chapthedoor · 17/03/2019 12:26

Thank you that was very useful. The first link didn't work for me

OP posts:
Rollerbird · 17/03/2019 13:00

My top is a 12 and bottom an 8-10
I have no waist but a flat tummy.
Going to check out some links

SteelRiver · 17/03/2019 13:46

Try wearing a darker colour, slim fitting top on your top half with some looser fitting trousers, or a A-line skirt, in a lighter of bright colour, on your bottom half. This could help to hide your top half and highlight your bottom half, balancing you out. An A-line skirt or dress will also help create an hourglass silhouette.
