Hair dye allergy

I recently had a very bad allergic reaction after having my hair coloured at my usual salon. As a bit of background, I've always had highlights in my hair, for the past 10 years at the same, reputable salon. Last November, I decided to try something different and had balyage, so my roots were darkened. I didn't have a patch test beforehand because I'd been going to the same place for so long (I know, I shouldn't have assumed!Blush) but neither did the salon ask me to. 24 hours after having my hair done (which I loved initially) my whole scalp broke out in blisters, my face began to swell up and after a few days I got an infection in my glands due to it! It was horrendous!
Now, almost 5 months on, I am looking to get my colour done again; my colour's faded and I have a few greys peeking through! I decided to go back to my usual highlights. This time I did have a patch test (the salon have now changed their policy and won't colour hair without one) but, again, I've come out with a reaction! The salon haven't been particularly forthcoming with ideas about what I can do now and, I know my safety has to come first, but my hair is such an important thing in helping me feel good about myself!
Has anyone been in a similar situation and be able to give me any advice?

That sounds like a seriously bad reaction.
After years of using L'Oréal crème casting on my hair, I have developed an allergy to it. My scalp feels numb. Not as serious as yours but it's really uncomfortable and a very odd sensation.

My hairdresser said any hair dye contains chemicals to open the hair shaft to enable the colour to take. End of. The only solutions according to her were

  1. balayage (I'm in France; think this is low lights??)
  2. henna
  3. Adapt hair cut to minimise greys

I'll be interested to hear any other advice on this thread.

Cap highlights or low lights. If you want a more full coverage colour multiple rounds of cap highlights or lowlights or ask the stylist to pull really chunky bits of hair through the cap.
