Oily skin and huge pores- advice needed

Hello all. I am 42 with oily skin, and no matter how much I prep my skin in a morning, within half an hour, my nose, cheeks and chin are very oily and pores visible. I use retinol and vitamin c, and am very happy with my skin care routine, but what do you recommend to set my makeup to keep it looking reasonable, until at least lunchtime? I use NARS light reflecting loose powder, which is great initially, but- BOOM- 15 mins later, my skin looks crap. If I add more powder, it cakes and looks crap. Anyone got any tips or recommendations to help me? Thank you x

Use a primer before you put foundation on or instead of it.

Perfumista · 16/03/2019 14:23

Any recommendations for a primer? I don't want something that will clog my pores and exacerbate the problem by adding spots.

I got a loreal matt primer, and tried a more expensive one from bare minerals matt primer, none made any difference to my oily skin but might work for you. I also find using a compact powder rather than loose powder stays matt much longer.
Bare minerals have a range of powder foundation that are really good and I use these sometimes and you can build just like a normal foundation.
The other thing I found works well is basically medium to heavy coverage foundation - a good one! I have a clarins matt one, and I also had that "double wear" one on my wedding day with some finishing powder and that seemed to work well. I guess it kinda keeps the oil in??

Ultimately I always end up powdering again in the day no matter what I do if i don't want to look shiny.

Also how often do you wash your face and moisturise etc? Sometimes the more you wash and get rid of the oil, the more oil you produce so its a vicious circle.

If you are based in London, I would love to have a look at your skin and even give you a free make up.

There are several things that normally would work for your skin (and only testing them tells you if they are right or not)

  1. The days you are not putting make up on your skin, just wipe the greasy areas with special tissue (even toilet paper works for me and my skin is mixed): nose, forehead, chin
  2. Primer: I really love Revlon PhotoReady and it covers the open pores near my nose just beautifully - who would have thought? I used to say 'I just have pores' I tried in the past to minimise un-successfully. Micro-dermabrasion packages (I prefer the Diamond tip ones) used to help but the pores came back. Once in a while I do an acid mini peel with acid I found online: I would not recommend it unless you know what you are doing though
  3. Before the primer I apply though the toner/serum/cream (I started with Shisheido but found cheap and good stuff for my skin at Boots)
  4. Laura Mercier Loose powder is rather good (I got mine on Amazon) but I would use it only when going out.
  5. For eyes, I use Mac Concealer NC 15 (as I have very light skin) but only when applying make up as normally I tend to go 'au naturele': this is very good indeed and even Primark make up stays on forever. Primark or Prada, all is good if you pay attention to small details and the needs of your skin.

Check youtube.com and use the right key words like 'makeup for greasy skin' as some videos are rather good. However take everything with a pinch of salt: after all, we are so different.

Paula's Choice Shine Stopper is pretty much the only thing that stops me shining brighter than the sun within an hour of putting my makeup on - I'm a product junkie and I've never found anything more effective.

I use innisfree no sebum mint mineral loose powder, after using tinted moisturiser. Is your foundation/tinted moisturiser oil free? I used to use primer but I don’t bother any more, partly because I use an spf that has a lovely primer finish and partly, like you, I found that after a short time my skin looked no better and they didn’t control oil anyway.

Rather than adding more powder, I always use blotting sheets. DHC do ones that don’t include any powder, they just absorb the oil very effectively and don’t disturb makeup.

I use Guerlain Parure Gold, which is where I could be going wrong. Also, I like the idea of the SPF having a primer finish- which do you use? I currently use Avene Cleanance SPF and it doesn't help!

I’m using Biore UV bright milk SPF 50. I love it. Good for oily skins. My skin is fairly pale so it might not work for a darker skin. It’s ever so slightly pale pink when it comes out of the bottle but absorbs well and leaves a lovely finish. I buy from Japanese sellers on eBay so it takes a few weeks to arrive. Dr Sam Bunting has a new SPF, supposed to be good for oilier skins with a primer like finish. I haven’t tried it so can’t comment, It’s pricey though. Biore one is about £7.

I too am suoer oily and I find the following to work well

Fjrst if all from the inside - it's all about reducing aldostone and cortisol so I take spearmint tea twice a day and Ashgawandha supplement - one at night. Since doing this, my oily skin is much much improved.
In the morning I use Hydra Genius serum by loreal then a really light mattifying SPF etude ho use Airy Fairy finish.
Best primer, and I have tried them all!, is W7 - cheap as chips from Ebay. Fills in pores and helps to keep matte.
Then I use Laura Geller Balance n Brighten foundation - this has really helped. I hsed to use mattifying foundations but this is a cream baked into a powder and jt seems to stop oil production by moisturising if that makes sense. Plus it really covers pores using a small brush to stipp!e as jt has an airbrush effect.ir
All of these things really help but for me the most important things are the supplements. I also take DIM complex which has cured my perimenopausal acne.

I also have oily skin and huge pores in my nose.

I swear by Benefit porefessional. I dab it on and the pores disappear like magic.

Perfumista · 16/03/2019 20:13

Some really good recommendations here. Benefit Porefessional sounds like a go-er as does PC shine stopper

I have the same issue with big pores and greasy shine. I'm not one for make up, but I do swear by Instablur from the Body Shop as a primer. I get through the day with minimal to no shine through the day when I wear that stuff.

And on the odd occasion that I do use a foundation it has helped immensely.
