How to avoid blackheads on the side of nose?

Batsypatsy · 15/03/2019 02:08

For years I've only washed my face with warm water morning and night. But I'm getting a lot of blackheads on the sides of my nose and I can't squeeze them out. I've used a biore nose strip to remove them but would like to avoid getting so many again.

It's not been helped by the fact that I had a new nose piercing so couldn't do much for a while.

My skin is sensitive and I'm in my 50s.

Any suggestions for products I can use? Nothing too time consuming or I'm unlikely to do it and I can't spend vast amounts either.

Liz Earle cleanse and polish....rub over your face then rinse off with warm water and a muslin. (And get some spot picker tools...like Dr Pimple Popper uses for dealing with the blackheads. £6.99 off Amazon)

Are you sure they’re blackheads? They’re probably nasal filaments. Squeezing them out enlarges your pores and makes things worse.

Batsypatsy · 17/03/2019 10:05

Yes, on the side of my nostrils they're blackheads .. they came out with a Biore strip. On the top of my nose I've filaments .. they annoy me too and I can't do anything about them.

I don't think I'd be able to use the blackheads tool on the side of my nose.

I find regular use of acnecide on the nose keeps them at bay it's benzoyl peroxide based.

Frenchmontana · 17/03/2019 10:10

I use coconut oil every night. Slap it on, leave it for a couple of minutes and then remove with a flannel. I make sure I get all the coconut oil off. I have oily skin, so dont like to leave any on my skin.

I get the flannel, wrap it round my finger and rub round my nose in a little circles.

On a morning I wash with a face wash. I change the face wash depending in what is on offer when I am buying it.

Coconut oil blocks pores, I would not use that on my face

Not for everyone. It doesnt for me. Its sorted mine out. It's the same as a lot of things. You need to try it, to see if it works for you. Smile

Frenchmontana's talking about oil cleansing which can be quite effective as oil dissolves oil. You can use mineral or jojoba instead of coconut which can be comedogenic for some people.

What I've used more recently is just salicylic acid, which you can get for under £5 online from The Ordinary (or Boots and Superdrug do various acne cleansers with it in). My pores have never been cleaner!

JDSTER · 17/03/2019 14:10

Salicylic acid breaks down oil and is the recommended treatment for sebaceous filaments and blackheads. Paula’s choice do a good 2% BHA liquid you can use a few times a week, applied on cotton wool on the oily areas.

ZaraW · 17/03/2019 16:10

I use Krasr microdermabrasion it's fab.

Batsypatsy · 17/03/2019 16:29

Thanks I'll look into salicylic acid.

How long does the salyclic stuff take to make a difference?

Haypanky · 17/03/2019 20:09

I've been using it about a week and am at the stage of thinking I see a difference then thinking am I imagining it...

PinkLipsDontLie · 18/03/2019 11:12

I use a face wash with salicylic acid and it clears my skin very well, helps both prevent and heal breakouts. Blackheads don't even get a chance to develop.
For many years you had only been wetting your face, not cleansing, you need to actually dissolve dirt and wash it off. There are many options for face wash for a sensitive skin. You need to use it religiously both morning and night.
Steer clear of any products not marked as "non-comedogenic". If using oils, check for the ones appropriate for oily, acne prone skin.

Batsypatsy · 18/03/2019 11:37

Is there a reasonably priced one that's suitable for sensitive skin that you'd recommend?

I second the Paula’s choice suggestion. It’s made such a difference to me. You can buy a small size to try for less than a tenner - it lasted me two months.

Batsypatsy · 18/03/2019 11:44

Thanks. Where can I buy it?

OP posts:
MrsMcnulty20 · 18/03/2019 12:12

I bought it online directly from them. Just google Paula’s choice.

DubiousGoals · 18/03/2019 19:01

Superfacialist do a salycilic facewash, it's about £7-8 in Boots, and they have it a third off quite often. I use it every morning and it's never upset my sensitive skin, and has worked wonders on both blackheads and cystic acne.

Batsypatsy · 18/03/2019 19:49

Thanks Dubious
