Saw a mum taking her girl to school. The girl was wearing rust knickerbockers and fawn tights (or very long socks). Please , I hope these are not coming back in are they? I am hoping it is just the world's worst school uniform......

Perhaps it wasn't a little girl at all, but a pageboy. From the 1980s. Or some Germans. DH's brother is married to a German. Lederhosen and tights were not a look that did my poor nephew any favours when he was smaller.

TitchyP · 13/03/2019 14:20

Perhaps a costume for Delayed World Book Day?

Lauren83 · 13/03/2019 14:21

Bloomers and tights are very much in fashion for babies and children at the moment although haven't seen any knickerbockers about

Deathraystare · 13/03/2019 14:43

Definitely english girl.

Historical dressing up day.

Deathraystare · 13/03/2019 15:04

Oh. That's alright then! A few days ago I was passing Tesco and saw a lot of kids in dress up. One guy had half an orange face (bottom half). Not sure what that was all about.

I had some of these in the 80s and worn them with gold ballerina pumps. or a frilly lady di shirt with velvet bow

GinaCarbonara · 13/03/2019 15:24

Where are you? There's a school in London that has a similar sounding uniform

CoolShoeshine · 13/03/2019 15:52

My mum wouldn’t buy me any in the 80s so I had to tuck my trousers into my long socks. If they come back into fashion I’m going to make my mum buy me some Grin

Deathraystare · 13/03/2019 15:59

Gina - really? West London. I was being a bit sarky when I said it might be a school uniform - surely not!!!

It's a school uniform. Hideous. Hill House I think.

It reminds me of the navy knickerbockers with burgundy socks I used to wear to look like Lady Di

cathyandclare · 13/03/2019 16:03

at ensemble, not Lady Di of course.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 13/03/2019 16:18

I know of at least one school that puts boys in breeches. Similar colours to what you describe actually.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 13/03/2019 16:20

Attachment fail

Tootrousers · 13/03/2019 16:30

I don’t think we need to worry about something coming into fashion because a child was spotted wearing it

BikeRunSki · 13/03/2019 16:32

That’s the Hill House uniform (Chelsea).

SrSteveOskowski · 13/03/2019 17:07

I've just googled the uniform. Those poor kids! Confused

Gazelda · 13/03/2019 17:09

Were they velvet?

Deathraystare · 13/03/2019 17:46

I've just googled the uniform. Those poor kids!

So have I - it looks like it is that!

Tootrousers - I was kind of joking. I hoped it wasn't becoming the fashion again but as I am not a world leading fashion expert I thought I had better check!

OP posts:
Deathraystare · 13/03/2019 17:48

Gazelda - I did not look too closely (really off putting!) They looked a bit more elasticy at the base than the Hill House ones but the cape thing looked similar and Mummy definitely had a 'naice' accent.

I wasn't sure if it was cord or velvet - probably velvet.

thedevilinablackdress · 13/03/2019 21:21

Oh, this has taken me right back. To about 1982. They were burgundy velvet, with a matching bolero waistcoat and a VERY flouncy blouse.

SapphireSeptember · 14/03/2019 12:43

This is why I want ridiculous school uniforms banned when I take over the world...

I bet they'll be back in fashion soon, trousers seem to be getting shorter every season. Do people not mind having chilly ankles? Hmm (I'm not old, just don't bother following fashion! I have my own sense of style that I stick to. Chilly ankles are not a part of it.)

Cuch · 14/03/2019 13:09

Have just googled the Hill House uniform. Jesus. The kids look like Oompa Loompas.

BikeRunSki · 14/03/2019 18:13

I believe the HH uniform was designed to be worn for classroom lessons and PE ie: loose knickerbockers/shorts/culottes and polo/aeretex shirts for sports and lessons, then woolly jumpers and cravats to smarten up a bit. Had some childhood friends who went there, and lived close by, so we got to snigger at this uniform on a daily basis. The schools my siblings and I attended didn’t have uniforms we all just wore converse boots and skinny jeans
