So I’m mid 40’s and a size 16. I’ve been buried in bringing up children for a couple of years and have just looked in the mirror and I look like waynetta! I need to buy clothes that are quality and that fit right. I love rurally so they need to practical too. Good fitting jeans that don’t sag, quality tops that are long enough to cover a belly, I want a smart look, but effortless. I realise that the clothes I have are mostly all H&M and are crap. I don’t even know where to shop, where to begin! I am not into make up but keep clean and my hair is long and straight. Can anyone guide me to a shop where I will find appropriate clothing? A brand that works? I feel older than I am just now. Thanks

What sort of style do you like? Instinctively I want to suggest some stuff from joules. Nice pair of well cut jeans, some leather wellies (ariat do some nice ones) or ankle boots, and a nice shirt with sweater over the top.
In summer you can have a longer tunic top, and wear saltwater sandals or deck shoes.
Those clothes would be simple, easy to wear and fairly good quality. Obviously not massively fashionable , but quite classic.

What sort of look are you after? Have you tried Pinterest?

Ploppymoodypants · 11/03/2019 10:54

Anything like this any good? Sorry if I am way off the mark

I always think Jennifer Aniston looks great, I realise that I am a lot bigger than her but that kind of smart clean look appeals to me.

How about Gap for jeans and good basics? Good quality and value.

Fatasfook · 11/03/2019 11:11

Great, so gap and joules, any other shops to try? I have to shop online as I rarely go to the city

If you like your jeans and practical wear then I'd stick to that but better more expensive versions, and invest in a really decent brand bag (leather), coat, and boots (leather) for every day wear. Tan boots and bag for summer and black for winter (if you wear black, if not then brown/tan fine). If you add one or two nice accessories that go with everything like a simple silver necklace and/or bracelet then that helps to make ordinary outfits look like you've made the effort. I've found (being overweight myself in the past) that fine chains and delicate bracelets can be tricky when you are overweight so go for something a bit more substantial. Maybe a chunkier necklace, something like amber beads or Lola Rose (but nothing plastic). Work out if you like softer stretch fabrics or non-stretch fabrics. If stretchy then make sure they are 100% cotton and of a good weight for the item. Exceptions are if it's (for example) a draped jersey top in which case you'd want the finer weight jersey (stretch) fabric.

Joules is a good suggestion as is White Stuff, Mint Velvet (for dressing up), Seasalt, and Fat Face has some good jumpers etc. If you buy quality then it lasts far longer so it probably works out the same as buying cheap that bobbles and falls to pieces/goes out of shape in the wash. Look at outdoorsy type brands online and see what you like.

Try to work out what colour suit you. There's various colour analysis websites online which you can do a basic colour analysis to work out if you suit brights, pastels, cool or warm tones. If you suit cool brights for example then a jewel green top would look great with jeans. Most people can't go wrong with stripes or a Breton look top on the top half, it always looks good/smart/casual at the same time.

You need enough stuff to have a "uniform" that mixes and matches rather than this top only going with those jeans, etc. Also make sure you have enough of the right socks and underwear to go with your outfits. I buy these from supermarkets as I usually find them good quality, good price and comfortable and I can have lots of them.

And invest in a good fitting bra or 5!

Thank you violet! That is all very helpful, I’m going to make myself a cuppa and start browsing these shops. Thank you so much!

Fat face
Completely flattering dresses with chunky cardigans and knee high boots. So pleased I found them. I have this dress in about 7 colours. I'm a 14/16 and I but a 14. The sizing is very generous.
Always have sales on.
Great customer service

I know it’s not very fashionable but m&s have some great basics for size 16s - jeans, shirts, denim skirts, casual dresses etc

BridlingtonSand · 11/03/2019 16:24

I was stuck in a bit of a jeans/T-shirt/Hoodie hole which, as you can imagine, made dressing for work tricky. I just didn’t know how to dress for my age and size.

I followed some blog advice and did the Kibbe thing and it’s really helped. It was just the guidance I needed to give me enough confidence to update my look.

Fatasfook · 11/03/2019 17:31

What’s the kibbe thing?

It’s like a body style thing - what suits your facial features, body shape etc. I followed a series of videos on YouTube and it comes out with a label and recommendations.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 11/03/2019 18:32

I'm going to suggest" styledbysusie" - its a facebook group and also a website. Honestly its brilliant! I feel 10 years younger since joining, the facebook group is so supportive and gives you confidence to try different looks.
You can be analysed for your shape & season if you want to (although that does cost) however you can just request to joing the facebook group and you will get loads of inspiration from the lovely ladies on there. All different shapes, sizes and ages, but all learning to be body confident again!
The best thing ever! And Susie and Zoe are so lovely and encouraging. (and no, I have no affiliation to them, just love how they've changed my outlook!)

GreenandBlueButterfly · 11/03/2019 18:42

Do you like any of these?

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/03/2019 19:19

It all starts with well fitting underwear. Get yourself measured for a new bra if you haven't been fitted recently.

thedevilinablackdress · 12/03/2019 07:22

White Company and Mint Velvet if you want a Jennifer Aniston type look.

Fatasfook · 13/03/2019 08:58

Just an update to say thank you to you all for taking the time to help me! I have looked into kibbe and styled by susie and have spent a few quid updating my wardrobe and chucking 3 bin bags worth away! Looking forward to all my online shopping arriving and feeling a lot better. You ladies are great! FlowersCakeWine
