Purple shampoo on brunette hair?

Fortyfatandfedup · 11/03/2019 06:29

I have natural brunette hair with some colour at the front (also brown) to cover the first few grey hairs. Ive now decided to go natural and grow out the colour.

I've read quite a bit about purple shampoo being used for grey hair to make it less yellow (I would quite like my grey strands to be as bright as possible) but I don't have that much grey right now....what would the impact be on my natural brunette hair?

Not in any way an expert but I am the same - brown hair with a few greys at the front. And I may have used some of my sister's purple shampoo out of curiosity to see what it did. I think my greys did look brighter (though they were pretty white to start with) and my brown hair looked no different to normal as far as I could tell? But I only used it for a week so no idea how it affects hair over a long period of time.

I have dark red/auburn hair and put in highlights every summer. I use the purple shampoo to stop them going too yellow/brassy. I’m just getting Frist grey hairs too so will be doing the highlights thing early this year and intend on using the purple shampoo again - it works really well, doesn’t have any noticeable affect on the rest of my hair.

Lovely! Just had a fear that purple shampoo would also lighten my natural brunette hair. To be honest it's turning grey fast and I'd like to keep it dark as long as possible! Grin

You need No more orange by Fanola. It's blue shampoo and is for exactly your issue.

RuggyPeg · 11/03/2019 07:25

Ok, ignore me. Guilty of skim reading your post and then replying. Went back afterwards and read properly and saw I was wrong. Whoops. No more orange is for getting rid of brassiness in brown hair - it has nothing to do with greys! Sorry 🤭

Fortyfatandfedup · 11/03/2019 07:26

Never heard of that shampoo...(rushes online!...). Thanks for the tip!

That's ok. Fanola does a purple shampoo anyway which looks very reasonably with good reviews. I may give that a try!

I’ve been using Josh Woods Cool Shots and conditioner for about 3 months, I stopped dying my hair brown last May. I use it once a week and it makes my hair softer & shinier. The dyed brown is less orange than it would have been without carrying out these treatments.

I have tried a few purple shampoos but find Joico the dogs bollocks. I have brunette with blonde hi and lo lights and my hairdresser recommends Joico. She's an experienced hairdresser who is very good at colour work and has her own hair various colours but swears by Joico.

I use Charles Worthington Blue Shampoo. I get red undertones as my colour fades. It is good but stains your hands so wear gloves.

Lots of great recommendations- thanks so much! X

Someone recommended Aveda Blue Malva. Anyone used that before? It's quite expensive, but happy to invest if it works!

i got the fanola puple shampoo. but it made my blonde highights look lilac. what did i do wrong, i only washed my hair with it, i didnt leave it on for 5 mins like someone on youtube did.

Puppylucky · 12/03/2019 08:45

I've used the Aveda one - it's OK but nothing special for the price.

Lilmissmissy · 12/03/2019 23:44

Whatever silver shampoo you use do not over use as that is when you start to get a purple/lilac look use maybe once or twice as a week as excessive use can be get drying on the condition if the hair.
I reccomend either- osmo silverising or fanola

It won’t lighten your naturally brunette hair, no

If it was dyed then yes it would lighten the colour

Fortyfatandfedup · 13/03/2019 06:58

Thanks! Good tip about only using a couple of times a week too. I don't want lilac hair at the moment 😉
