trousers for a long haul flight

I need some advice please for what to wear on a long haul flight. I'm travelling on Tuesday night, and probably can't get to the shops before then and this is a last minute panic! (need somewhere online with next day delivery). I usually wear joggers, but am travelling with colleagues and prefer to look a bit smarter. I quite like the Hush girlfriend chinos, but I can't wear sandals and am flying somewhere cold - can I wear trainers with them? Any other ideas on where to look and how to style a smarter look but not in jeans or tracksuit? TIA!

Can't help you I'm afraid as I fly long haul a couple of times a year for work and always wear Primark 5 trackies Grin

frozenbanana · 10/03/2019 10:57

Could do a nice wide leg trouser

Can you get or do you have some stretch trousers that look like trousers but are stretchy like leggings (urban twill from French Connection are like this but lots of places do similar)? Wear with a smartish t-shirt or top and long-line blazer / jacket in something like ponte. Hopefully Next might have something as they are good with next day delivery...

Leggings and a dress? Or leggings and a long cardigan or wrap. You could swap the leggings for tights and trainers for pumps when you arrive if you need to be smarter on arrival.

Hush harems. Perfect for the job.

lottielady · 10/03/2019 10:59

You could wear them with a white vest and an open shirt, or a smartish jumper.

VioletCharlotte · 10/03/2019 10:59

I would just wear leggings and a baggy long top.

wyoudo · 10/03/2019 10:59

I wear trainers, running leggings a vest and a jumper - comfy and don’t go all baggy round the bum and knees on the other end or for return leg

Are you flying business class? I generally wear smarter clothes onto the plane, change into leggings and top before takeoff, then change back before landing.

These are what I discovered for my last long haul flight. Absolutely love them, they're pull on, soft stretchy material but don't look like leggings - they are looser round the ankle.

I sized down and got them in short leg for a cropped look. However have recently bought them in regular length too and they are more ankle skimming. You can click and collect with M&S so could collect tomorrow if your size is in stock.

thanks for your suggestions so far... blazer is a good idea, although I think I need my puffa as it is cold where we're going so that in itself isn't smart either. Next is a good bet for some quick deliveries too so thank you for that, am googling. I have thought about the option of just changing into leggings for the actual flight, but I actually can't imagine having enough space in the toilets to change trousers - is it physically possible? (I'm not big, but I hate the toilets!)

Meant to say that they look much more tailored than leggings or joggers, but have the comfort factor of both!

Vargas · 10/03/2019 11:52

Hush harems, or a hush cashmere dress plus leggings and trainers/flat boots. A nice scarf is useful and smart too.

BatsAreCool · 10/03/2019 11:55

I always wear jeggins and a comfy long t-shirt.

On the changing front I fly first and on night flights change into the complimentary pjs in the toilet and then back again. It's doable but trying to make sure your clothes don't touch the floor or other surfaces is quite difficult.

pinegreen · 10/03/2019 12:06

Definitely possible to change on the plane.

Most long haul planes (certainly BA) have a seat that folds down over the loo (look to the right, looks like a fold down nappy changing table) which makes it easy enough to change out of jeans into leggings.

fishonabicycle · 10/03/2019 12:14

Legging/jeggings with vest top and long cardigan.

Fogandcat · 10/03/2019 12:24

Boden Richmonds with flight socks are my staples LH.

Splodgetastic · 10/03/2019 12:33

These are pricier than the M&S ones, but look rather smart (and similar to the French Connection ones I was thinking of):

£95! I will stick with the £15 ones for long haul though, I would be paranoid about spilling stuff and ruining them!

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/03/2019 13:24

When I fly long haul (for work or otherwise), I usually wear leather leggings (or fake ones from Asos) with a jersey dress over the top. It means I'm comfortable and covered up but still look fairly smart on arrival (no creases!). I tend to wear black as it hides any dirt or spillages. I can dress the look up or down, and I usually wear a huge silk or cashmere scarf (handy on the flight if it's cold but also looks stylish) plus some statement jewellery. It saves messing around getting changed in the toilets (as these can get very busy 20-30 mins before landing). I just add more layers if I'm going somewhere colder, or remove leggings on arrival and just keep the dress on if I'm arriving somewhere hot. Shoes vary but I always avoid boots if possible as in some places, this means having to remove your footwear as you go through security (which I don't object to but it all takes longer and I prefer to be through as soon as possible).

Splodgetastic · 10/03/2019 13:52

@AncoraAmarena, yes, the M&S ones appear better value, although the photo on their website is a bit fuzzy so it's hard to see! However, the OP didn't state a budget (although she did mention Hush, which I think isn't cheap). The Pure ones on the Next website look like fairly smart work trousers, with a side zip.

Whatever you wear, I think it's important not to make the mistake of wearing a jumpsuit for a flight lasting longer than two hours.

redeyes1 · 10/03/2019 15:22

loving these ideas, thank you. I have items in my basket in Asos, Allsaints and Next, and am open to any other suggestions.
