Getting used to thicker hair

I used to have my hair highlighted, but after having my two DC could no longer afford to. So it’s been two years since any bleach or colour, with the old bleach gradually growing out and trimmed. I have about an inch left to trim off.

Since having DD2 and the usual post partum hair loss, my hair has grown back thicker than ever (I have also taken a biotin supplement every day since last August) and is still growing in new baby hairs. It’s also curlier than it used to be and now I really don’t know how to style it. Ive never had thick hair! I’m using a T-shirt to dry instead of a towel but how do you MNetters style your thick hair and wear it during the day? If I do the usual mum bun it now just looks frizzy and wild!

We don't, we just suffer Confused maybe get your hairdresser to thin it out. My hair is very thick and I have a lot of it. I know mine needs cutting when it takes me 20 minutes just to wash it. Too much thinning makes mine go a bit wispy and flyaway but it is so much more manageable.

Is your hair curly and that's why it's frizzy? I had straight hair until I was 15, then the puberty hormones gave me curls, so pregnancy might do similar!

If your hair is curly then you could look into The Curly Girl Method. It's a way of using products and treating hair so you get soft and healthy curls. I used to think my hair was wavy but really frizzy, after a year of TCGM I now have actual ringlets and my hair has never been healthier.

Wow tilikum that’s amazing you have ringlets now! I have been using a T-shirt instead of a towel which I have found makes a small difference. What other methods did you use?

You're right! Using a T Shirt to dry is much better. Just gently squeeze the wetness out, instead of rubbing or twisting. It's a bit tough at first to find the method that works for you, but this is what works for me:

  1. Deep conditioning hair with Shea Moisture Jamaican black caster oil hair mask once a week. Put a shower cap on and tie a t shirt over your head for an hour while it's on, then rinse out with lukewarm water. This is THE BOMB. Your hair will actually feel like silk.
  1. Tie hair up gently with a claw clip rather than with a bobble that kinks and breaks the hair. Especially important when you sleep so your hair doesn't lose the curl by being pressed between your face and the pillow all night.
  1. Use a curling cream. After you've washed your hair with silicone free shampoo and conditioner, squeeze the worst of the moisture out with a T shirt or microfibre towel, rub some curl cream in the palm of your hands and then squish it into your hair. Add a giant blob of gel and do the same squishing, then plop your hair (tie it up in a turban made out of a fresh t shirt). After 20 minutes, unplop and let it dry naturally, or diffuse it on low heat, medium power and voila! Curly hair! If your hair has a cast on from the gel then you can scrunch the cast out to get to your curls.

My favourite curl cream is Cantu Curling Custard, but I know lots of people use Boots Curl Crème in the pink tub. That's about £2 so easy to try!

The washing and drying process takes a lot longer now than it did before CGM, but the morning routine is a lot shorter (no straightening!), so I guess it evens out.

Good luck if you decide to try it, I wish you spectacular curls!
