Need a warm cover up for wedding - bride

So we booked our wedding two weeks ago. It's in a couple of weeks. We're eloping, just us two and our two children to a wild and beautiful spot in Scotland. I've managed to get a sample gown from a local boutique it came with separate sleeves but at my fitting they had been altered and can't be used. The wedding will be outdoors as long as there's not a storm.

Got warm kit sorted for the children and my partner can sort himself out but can I heck find anything suitable to keep me warm (top half only I've got long johns if it's absolutely freezing and my bridal shoes are likely going to be some hunter wellies with fleecy socks!). I've seen pics of a few brides at this venue and they have tartan blankets which could be an option BUT we're not Scottish and I don't want to commit a touristy faux pas.

I attach pics of the dress, it's a champagne satin with an ivory overlay. anyone got any bright ideas? I'd rather avoid fur/feathers but would consider faux.

Sorry, posted too soon! Meant to say pleeeeeaseeee! Any help would be appreciated as this has been stress free so far and for me to begin worrying about a cover up seems silly!

I think I’d get a beautiful faux fur cape or bolero (monsoon did a lovely one last time I was looking, but if you want to keep the cost down I’d check eBay).

Or just a faux fur coat. Something glam in a pale colour, nude/beige/dusky pink so that it fits well for a wedding but you can use it again on evenings out.

Inliverpool1 · 09/03/2019 18:33

Go with the blanket everyone has a bit of Scottish in them

Ninkaninus · 09/03/2019 18:35

What would you be comfortable spending? If you can stretch to it my practical but expensive choice would be a cashmere pashmina. That would definitely keep you snuggly.

Thatsnotmyotter · 09/03/2019 18:37

I’d either go for a massive faux fur cape or a biker jacket, depending on how edgy I wanted to be!

MintToBee · 09/03/2019 18:38

I'm eloping in Scotland too to get married outside in Glencoe. I'm getting a black leather jacket to wear over my dress in the evening as it's going to be bloody freezing!

hiphopapotamuses · 09/03/2019 18:46

I could stretch to a cashmere pashmina/wrap as the wedding itself is inexpensive and the dress was a bargain. What sort of colour? Do I go for similar to the champagne or blush pink or go for something more obvious?

I do love the biker jacket bride look but I tend to wear biker jackets day to day so it wouldn't feel special

@MintToBee your wedding sounds like it'll be beautiful! Glencoe is so gorgeous!

I think I’d go for champagne or blush pink, because I love those colours right now and obviously they’d be beautiful with your ivory wedding dress. However you could go either way, really - something more dramatic and dark would also be beautiful and striking in person and in photographs.

Ninkaninus · 09/03/2019 18:55

If I were thinking about this for my own wedding, I would probably decide based on how much use I could get out of the wrap in years to come. So I would pick a warmer colour because that’s what actually suits my skin tone. I’d pick anything from wine red to olive green to coral to goldy browns to a blush pink with the right undertone.

I wore something like this cape for my winter wedding. Bought it of Etsy and they customised it for me, colour matching and adding an embellishment. The price was amazing too.

wigglybeezer · 09/03/2019 19:55

Shetland wedding shawl, really beautiful, and surprisingly warm despite being lacy. Quite expensive, however Estonian lace is very similar but cheaper. Have a Google and try Etsy.

MaidofKent78 · 09/03/2019 20:06

I knitted a shetland lace shawl in a wool/silk blend as my Something Blue for my wedding. It was surprisingly warm!

hiphopapotamuses · 09/03/2019 20:22

The Shetland shawls are beautiful. So, so intricate. I'd love to be able to knit anything like that (well I'd love to be able to knit anything tbh)
I'll have a look to see if there are ready made, the first few sites I've seen are made to order (and I don't have time left) or are selling patterns

Helen Moore do some lovely faux fur stuff. If there's nothing suitable in their range, why not ask about something custom? We're heading into spring, so they might be up for a one off, especially if it takes them into a new area of business. They are a small-ish company in Devon, but are sold in lots of high end stores. I've bought a hat for a Chistmas present for my sister, and a couple of odds and ends: they are incredibly efficient.

RainbowMum11 · 09/03/2019 20:55

Or a beautiful velvet cloak - I always said if I had a winter wedding I'd have one like the Scottish Widows advert (although perhaps not best for a wedding....)

Pyracantha2 · 09/03/2019 20:57

A cape a cape a cape a cape

A fur cape!

Pyracantha2 · 09/03/2019 21:00

Changed my mind, a velvet cloak!

DameXanaduBramble · 09/03/2019 21:00

Ive just bought this for my wedding in NYC, it’s beautiful.

pinegreen · 09/03/2019 21:20

Faux fur cape. I sold mine (from Coast) after my wedding for about £20 on eBay - keep an eye out.

LIVIA999 · 09/03/2019 21:25

I always think the bolero cardigan that Kate Middleton wore to her wedding reception looked pretty.

CountFosco · 09/03/2019 21:59

Ok. As a Scot I have to say forget about cashmere pashminas, that's what I'd wear to a summer wedding on a nice day. It's March in Scotland, it will be very cold (if you're going somewhere wild and beautiful this could be even more true). Wear a fake fur jacket or a leather biker. With a cashmere bolero under the jacket. Then wrap yourself in the tartan blanket (we're not precious about tartan, don't worry about that). And drink some whisky.

arhhhhhnofreeusernames · 09/03/2019 22:01

I have a lovely fake fur cape.

I had a winter wedding and - backless dress so it went over my shoulders low enough to cover my back and I had some poppers sewn into it at the front so it stayed crossed at the front.. it was perfect and warm.

Happy to loan if you don't find anything in time..message me!

Ninkaninus · 09/03/2019 22:19

I like Fosco’s suggestion!

I want a cashmere bolero.

And a Velvet cape!

MintToBee · 10/03/2019 08:08

Scrap the jacket. I've just changed my mind and have ordered a Royal Stewat Tartan Serape to match my sash.
