What is this...acne rosacea?

I’m looking for your opinion on what this might be?

Back story is my 14yr old had great skin but just after Christmas woke up one morning with a couple of blotches in her face. Dr initially diagnosed impetigo but after 3 weeks on antibiotics no improvement.

She’s now been put on lymecycline and only been taking for 3 weeks but frustratingly seems to be getting worse as now spread to chin and forehead.

It’s starting to affect her mood and confidence. I feel a bit useless tbh.

Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Perioral dermatitis? If you google it and look at the images, it looks quite similar. Could you ask for a referral to a dermatologist so they could take a swab and test it so you'd know? Beyond Skin is a really good book when you're having skin problems.
Good luck with finding a suitable treatment programme

Thanks for your reply I will have a look at that and yes I think a dermatology referral is next.

Poor kid. I have acne rosacea and it doesn't look like that, but that doesn't mean anything. I hope she gets a solution soon.

ArfArfBarf · 09/03/2019 11:32

I have rosacea and that looks more severe than mine.
Have they considered Lupus?

PlainPiglet · 09/03/2019 12:45

Sorry, it should be Beyond Soap by Dr Skotnicki. If nothing else, at least it outlines what ingredients to avoid which may exacerbate things.

teta · 09/03/2019 13:20

I don’t think it’s perioral dermatitis as that tends to occur around the mouth. It does look similar in distribution to a Lupus rash. But your daughter would have other symptoms of ill health too. I would request a urgent referral to a dermatologist as I can imagine how upsetting this is for a 14 year old. Poor thing.

Butterfly rash of lupus?

AgnesNaismith · 09/03/2019 13:22

Echo others - that’s not rosacea. I would be getting a referral ASAP.

Nothingfallingdowntoday · 09/03/2019 13:40

Thanks to you all. You’ve echoed exactly what I was thinking regards rosacea but I hadn’t thought of Lupus. She is fit and well otherwise so hopefully not but I’m going to push for a referral from the GP on Monday.

Not much to add, but ime if it was rosacea it would probably have responded to the antibiotics by now.

FuckertyBoo · 09/03/2019 16:06

I am on Lymecycline for rosacea and it has worked really well. I don’t think that’s rosacea. She’s also quite young to have such a severe case.

Definitely get a referral to dermatologist for her.

The only other thing I could think of was psoriasis?

tinstar · 09/03/2019 16:14

If you google images of lupus butterfly rash it does look very similar.

Foodylicious · 09/03/2019 16:16

It could well be acne rosacea.
I would go back to gp and ask for Metronidazole gel, and a dermatology referral. Bloods should be done too I think in case there is something else underlying.

AgnesNaismith · 09/03/2019 17:42

Soolantra is the best treatment for rosacea now Foodylicious as it kills the demodex bugs which cause acne rosacea in particular. Metronidazole kind of cleanses then of bacteria but will never clear it properly.
