My friend says buying good quality makeup definitely pays off. She buys YSL and Dior etc. It's very pricey so I don't want to jump in and buy just anything. What do you all recommend? Smile

Why not go for a few makeup counter makeovers and see which products you like?

sherbetstraws · 07/03/2019 19:15

Will they do that ElloBrian? I've always been too intimidated to ask lol

I feel the same. I am tempted to buy Clinique over my usual No7, thinking it will last longer and be better quality, but am afraid to spend the money. Sorry to jump in but just following with interest.

sherbetstraws · 07/03/2019 19:45

I've used Clinique a lot and it's ok but I can't say that it's amazingly special citygirl. I find it's a bit of a lottery really and I don't want to spend 30 quid on a lipstick that just comes off... you know?

I was "Hell No" when my DD asked for an Urban Decay lipstick. I don't even spend £15 on make-up for me !

Why spend so much when I could get a dozen from Superdrugs?

Well, the packaging is devine , the gold/silver case makes you want to whip your lippie out in public, it "clicks" expensively when you close it. Colour , wear time and coverage are far better .

And DD still has that lipstick , she takes great care of her make-up which she probably wouldn't with cheaper ones (though she does love some Superdrug bargains)

I'm not influenced by brand or advertising (unlike DD) but I have to say it's worth the investment .

sherbetstraws · 07/03/2019 19:46

Thank you!! That helps me :)

Estée Lauder face powder £35 is amazing and so light feeling. Loads of colours too and they test it all out on you first to match skin colour/see if you like it.

sleepalldays · 07/03/2019 19:48

Mac lipsticks are great too, usually £16 each and 100% worth it.

Urban decay eyeshadows are the best out there IMO. So pigmented and the basics pallets last ages for £39.

sleepalldays · 07/03/2019 19:48

*nakeds not basics!

GeorgeTheBleeder · 07/03/2019 19:53

Do Not, I repeat Do Not allow yourself to be tempted by the Tom Ford counter. If you buy (or preferably receive as a present) one single thing - you will never be able to look at any other brand for the rest of your life. No more mortgage (your house will soon be gone). No car. You'll be able to boast about your charity shop wardrobe. And you'll certainly need the pretty colours when you can't afford a holiday anymore.

But the things will make you so happy ...

sleepalldays · 07/03/2019 19:54

@GeorgeTheBleeder I'd kill to even try some TF stuff!! It truly is top notch I think.

NewYear12UserName · 07/03/2019 19:57

Her range is not everyone's cup of tea but I am a fan of Charlotte Tilbury.

EarlyModernParent · 07/03/2019 19:57

Nars is lovely. Lasts a long time too.

stepup123 · 07/03/2019 20:09

I wish we had sophora in the U.K., the consultants are great at going through different brands with you and will apply them so you can see how it looks.
I am all in favour of splashing out on make up - it's my guilty pleasure!

Zampa · 07/03/2019 20:11

Try Space NK. I always have good advice from them regarding both make up and skincare. However, I'm a Beauty Pie fan too.

citygirl1961 · 07/03/2019 20:12

Sherbertstraws, thanks that's helpful. I was thinking more of Clinique foundation as I did try a lipstick of theirs once and it still came off. However, £29.00 for a foundation seems a lot when No7 is good, its just that Clinique feels more special somehow.

Sparkletastic · 07/03/2019 20:17

It's totally worth it. Charlotte Tilbury is the best, MAC and Urban Decay also great.

sherbetstraws · 07/03/2019 20:18

Great help ty everybody xx
citygirl I've got their Even Better foundation but I'm finding Erborian BB creme is a lot better.

I’m totally with @Sparkletastic on those brands. The naked eye palettes are really lovely and I tend to buy the majority of my lipstick and gloss from Mac.

Fisharefriendstoo · 07/03/2019 20:21

I’ve tried so many from Clinique, Estee Lauder, Chanel, bare minerals, ysl etc but my current favourite is a £5 revolution foundation stick from Superdrug mixed with a rimmel so saving a fortune.

sherbetstraws · 08/03/2019 09:54

I've never looked at MAC - think I'll maybe try them first as they are slightly cheaper and a few of you seem to like them. Loving all this advice, thank you xx

Also Urban Decay look amazing - but very young colours and I'm not lol

I wasn’t super impressed with Tom Ford but I’ve only got the foundation. It’s nice but not twice the price of my Clinique foundation nice!

I buy a mixture of high end and drugstore. The majority is higher end though.

The only thing I consistently buy drug store is mascara. Spent £25 on an Armani mascara once, what a pile of crap! Max Factor are the best by a mile.

Also read reviews on makeup alley to get an idea of what others think of a product before you commit.

I bought a Dior lip stain on a whim a few years ago, it lasted like 5 minutes on my lips! Looked at the reviews and they all said the same thing.

Sexnotgender · 08/03/2019 10:03

I love urban decay comfort matte lipstick. I’m 36 so not super young, the colours are lovely and last ages.

Deathraystare · 08/03/2019 11:17

You'd think the foundations were better but as we have sometimes seen on these pages - not always. Posh ones can cake and oxidise just as much as the cheap ones!

If you want to splurge go for it. I have tried both. Yes I prefer Dior lipsticks etc but I cannot really justify splurging at the mo and anyway re mascara I don't feel the need to splash out on something you are supposed to chuck every three months!

I had some Chanel lipstick which did not impress me at all, but love Dior, Nars etc. I tell you one brand I really miss here and that is Helena Rubinstein. Loved the lipsticks , had a really nice foundations and the mascaras ...lovely! When I went to France years ago I made sure to get some stuff!
