what's your usual style?
what colours do you like / suit you?
what have you in the wardrobe already?

my immediate thought is a knee-length fullish skirt (to balance your top half) with a v-neck top / blouse / jumper / cardigan, or possibly a wrap.

I second Monsoon. Go to the one near the Glades (just seen where you live, local to me!) I went there almost in tears cos I couldn't find anything. I am 18 bottom and 20/22 top. One of their wonderful assistants spent nearly an hour with me just bringing load of things into the changing room to try on. Big choice there in larger sizes as well, they come up quite generous too so you may fit a 16. It was like having a personal shopper. Tried on loads of stuff I wouldn't have looked twice at and came away with a lovely top and linen trousers. Then nip accross to Shoon (by Pret-a-Manger) and treat yourself to some lovely shoes as well!

monsoon again but I bought this for the last christening I went to

www.monsoon.co.uk/invt/95207239

I also bought a thickish cardigan/jacket/shrug thing (difficult to explain) at the same time which was the same light blue and also some pewter shoes which were a lovely shape but neither of these are on the website.

Agree about Monsoon, I am a 10-12 but would also go there for occasion dresses.
Have also found the assistants to be v helpful (if you get a good one) and their clothes are made for weddings/christenings etc and they have lots of choice in size 18.
You can always browse the website first for ideas.

Their sale is very soon (in July I think) so it might be an idea to go now, take your time choosing then go and buy the outfit in the sale!

Also agree a wrap/shrug to go with a dress woudl be useful for September...

Sorry Mrs B!

Answers to your questions....

I so try to be classy, but fail miserably. I avoid loud patterns that draw too much attention to myself. I avoid empire line tops as cleavage ends further south than is decent!

I love teal/turquoise/jade colours but so often wear black.

I haven't got much in the way of smart clothes in the wardrobe currently as we have most of our clothes in storage. Although I do have a pair of linen trousers (beige)
