What's the most you've ever had a ring resized by

I have a ring I want resizing. It’s an m and I need it to be an i. It’s a very small single stone setting and a very thin white gold band. Has anyone successfully had a ring resized this much? Googling is not giving me much hope

Best advice is to take it into a jewellers and see what they say. We have a very good jewellers near us who do repairs, create bespoke etc., and they sized up my wedding ring and my mum's engagement ring so that I could wear them. Both rings were an O and they sized up to S.

Richlyfruited · 07/03/2019 13:23

I had my engagement ring resized down 2.5 sizes to an I. That's the most they would do (it's still too big but I put up with it) and I'd taken it to around 10 jewellers before I found one that was prepared to do it. A lot depends on the style as mine was a half eternity band so they were concerned about stones popping out.

I really don't know but would think with a single stone on a thin band you might have less of an issue?

PositivelyPeach · 07/03/2019 14:54

I'm pretty sure I needed an M to an I (stupid DH thought I looked like I had the same size fingers as MIL)

They did it but warned that it would seriously compromise the stone setting (1.5ct diamond 😬) In the end we went to a local independent jeweller and had a brand new ring made for the stone as I was too scared to wear it.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 07/03/2019 16:43

My Victorian engagement ring was an M and needed to go to an R Blush. Unfortunately, the salesman did such a flowery R it looked like a K... So then they had to do it again to an R

So maybe precious metals are tougher than we think?

Thedarklady · 07/03/2019 17:59

Personally I would remove the stone and create a new ring. You could give the jeweller the metal of the current ring to keep and get a discount on the cost of the new ring.

I’ve had a couple of small balls stuck to the inside of the band
And it holds a too large ring in position. An independent jeweller did it rather than cut ring. Had them on ring for 5 years and is perfect.

littlecloudling · 07/03/2019 20:10

@YetAnotherThing could you post a picture either of yours or similar online? I don't want to resize mine but it's a bit too big

Thedarklady · 07/03/2019 20:15

I've just realised how tiny size I is - I have thin fingers (and I'm 6 stones 11lbs and 5'3") and my ring size is K/L.

mysteryfairy · 07/03/2019 20:40

I think I have witches hands as I’m actually 5ft 10 so not a tiny person! When I was researching last night i comes up as a ‘pinky’ ring but this is for my ring finger. I’m wearing an i 1/2 ring today but it’s just too loose to not to be annoying.

littlecloudling here’s a pic. Apologies but It’s hard to see clearly on photo because if I zoom in you get glare. The band is an eternity ring so diamonds on outside that we didn’t want to cut and jeweller put on these two balls on inside of band that both sit on palm side of the ring (5pm and 7pm if that makes sense) and so ring sits fine

MsOtisRegrets · 08/03/2019 17:00

I had a 5 stone victorian ring resized from fitting my grandma's large fingers to my tiny hands (5ft 10 ins grandma 5ft me). At first I couldn't find a jeweler to do it as they were fearful of breaking the setting - basically wouldn't take the risk. In the end my friends husband (jeweler) did it for me on the understanding that I took the risk and if it didn't work he would make it into earings. It was fine and 30 years later I am still wearing it everyday.

mysteryfairy · 10/03/2019 15:43

the ring is this one which I picked up second hand. My local jeweller has accepted it for reduction from m to h1/2 (my fingers are apparently shrinking during this thread!) and replating as it’s gone a bit yellowy - his total cost to do this is £49. He didn’t seem worried about the dramatic resize needed. I love the look and craftsmanship of the ring but the stone and metal have very low intrinsic value so it’s either going to work or have been a bit of an experiment!

My husband had a ring downsized 10 sizes. It had a substantial gold band and was fairly strong. It was his ring, he had it downsized to fit me as a wedding present (I saw it in a box as he hadn't worn it for years, it has his initial on it. I loved it. So he gave it to me as my wedding present. It worked because his surname starts with the same letter as his first name, so when we got married and I took his name it made sense).

VelvetPineapple · 10/03/2019 15:51

Depends on the setting. I picked a solitaire ring and the jeweller said he could resize it. But when he bent the band, the setting flexed and the shoulders of the ring snapped. He attempted to botch a repair but the setting was too fine and it was a blobby mess. Luckily as I’d bought the ring from him I just refused to accept it. If I’d already owned the ring I’d have been screwed.

Imo get balls put in as a pp said. Your fingers will expand as you get older and you’ll be able to have the balls removed.
