Any scientifically proven ways to reduce hair greasiness?!

This is my hair today, last washed on Monday Blush

I try to only wash it twice a week because it’s also very long, coarse and frizzy. The ends get horribly dry

I do not have fine hair!!
I know the most popular suggestion is to “wash your hair less” etc because washing strips your natural oils and causes more oil.
I’ve read that in plenty of online articles but can’t seem to find any hard evidence backing this?

Also, I have pcos so I presume it could be linked to that

I don’t put conditioner in the roots either. Don’t use extremely hot water and rarely use heat on my hair (again don’t know the truth in this but from googling some people claim heat can stimulate sebum)

I feel like Roaccutane may be the only viable solution, but I already have eczema 😩

I can't help that much because I also REALLY struggle with this so placemark.

I have oily skin, and I have a specific condition on my face related to that, I suspect it also affects my scalp

Things that have HELPED worth trying.

Braiding hair before sleeping

Scalp Detox - Bumble And Bumble once a week

I also really rate their Seaweed Shampoo and Conditioner

However it's EXTREMELY expensive for shampoo and I've only bought it once

Alternatives

L'Oréal Elvive Clay (Mint Bottle)

Herbal Essences Strawberry And Mint - says CLEAN on the bottle Pink. Been using about 2 weeks rate it but not nearly as much as the £££ one

I use the cheapest clear shampoo not a creamy one, do not condition and keep it trimmed. I blow dry only after leaving my hair wet for an hour or so. I have very thick black hair too. Fewer treatments = better hair. I wash my hair every other day but use a pea sized amount of shampoo.

Thedarklady · 06/03/2019 18:53

Clear, clarifying shampoo or SLS free shampoo bar (goat milk based ones are good).
Silk wrap at night. They spread the oil from the roots to the ends, improving the condition of your hair. Try Silke - expensive but fantastic. 20 percent off at look fantastic with the code LF20
Greasy and oily food make hair (and skin) oilier. I find cheese particularly bad.
Hand detangle hair and then use a good quality comb (Kent is my favourite and well priced), starting from the ends and then working up.
Eating fruit and veg seem to help as does drinking water.

Soap, the same soap bar I use to clean by hands/body/face. I think most shampoos have conditioning properties even just the tiny amount but you don't get the squeaky clean feeling like soap does. So when you use shampoo and conditioner it just produces grease. Some people find reducing the conditioner helps but personally I find a stronger surfactant is more effective. After a good cleanse it most certainly needs some sort of conditioner which I find is protecting the strength of the hair.

mrscampbellblackagain · 06/03/2019 19:31

I have fine hair and do a fair amount of exercise. I wash my hair every day or it would be horribly greasy. The condition is fine - why not just wash it every day?

mrscampbellblackagain · 06/03/2019 19:33

I also read an interview with a trichologist years ago which said washing your hair everyday is fine if your hair needs it. And honestly, who wants to walk around with greasy hair that smells and looks and feels horrid.

donajimena · 06/03/2019 19:33

I've tried everything. Now I just wash it everyday. Sad

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/03/2019 19:40

Obvious question maybe but why keep it long?

SummersB · 06/03/2019 19:45

My friend has pcos which used to give her horribly greasy hair. Think wash in the morning, greasy by lunchtime. She started washing it with a paste made from bicarbonate of soda instead of shampoo and it took a few weeks but it has made a huge difference. She only needs to wash it a couple of times a week now instead of daily.

MynameisJune · 06/03/2019 19:51

I used to have to wash my hair every day/every other day and I hated it as it’s long and takes forever.

Then I discovered an Ayurvedic solution called Bringadi. My friend got me it from India on a trip but you can order it through Amazon.

For the last 3 months I’ve put this on my hair, washed with a vegan shampoo that is sls and paraben free. No conditioner at all and now I can wash my hair once or twice a week and it’s not greasy in between.

I’ve just introduced a vegan conditioner now on the ends which I do before I shampoo now.

It has completely changed my hair and made my life so much easier.

@MynameisJune

Would you mind linking me to the exact right thing? I'm looking on Amazon and feel a bit puzzled because they are talking about hair loss and greying in the prod. Description and I don't know if it's the right thing?

MynameisJune · 06/03/2019 20:17

@bartonhollow

It’s this one

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00SUTAE6S/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_a_it?ref=plSrch&keywords=bringadi&dpPl=1&dpID=41QE3K8-f5L&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1551903213&sr=8-2

I used it for conditioning at first as my hair was getting dry at the ends. Noticing the length of time between washes was an unintended consequence really. It’s given my hair a chance to reset I think and stop the excess oil production because of the cycle of constant washing I’d gotten into.

Thank you, you are a Star purchased

Trichology is the science of the structure, function and diseases of the human hair.

Nelsondog · 07/03/2019 23:12

I agree with mrscampbellblackagain some people need to wash their hair more often than others. I need to wash mine every other day. I use Pantene Aqua Light Shampoo and Conditioner which has reduced it to every other day rather than everyday.

OrigamiZoo · 07/03/2019 23:18

What about dry shampoo at night? Brush out in the morning.

Pinkjellyfish · 07/03/2019 23:27

I haven’t found anything that makes that much of a difference Sad If I have to I put dry shampoo in at night like origami suggested and it does look ok the next day, especially if I put my hair up. I’ve tried the L’Oreal clay shampoo and hair mask which helped a tiny bit but not enough to stop me needing to wash my hair as often. The boots build up removal shampoo is good for keeping it slightly less greasy and it makes my hair look pretty nice

juniperjune · 07/03/2019 23:28

I used to wash every day and now do alternate with dry shampoo on the not wash days. I'm not sure using so much dry shampoo is very good and I'd love to be able to leave it longer, it gets greasy so quickly though. It's greasy by morning if I wash the night before, it's good condition otherwise.

OogieMcBoogie · 07/03/2019 23:31

@Thedarklady I’ve just ordered a SILKE wrap with the discount code you gave; thank you ! Hoping it makes a difference!

Thedarklady · 08/03/2019 07:29

For me it worked really well @OogieMcBoogie

I have straight, smooth and shiny hair naturally but it was always a bird's nest in the morning. It really hurt to detangle or took too long. Silk or satin pillowcases helped a bit but the wrap is much better.

Now my hair is smooth and tangle free and has a light wave to it in the morning. It redistributes oil too so I have normal hair not oily roots and dry ends. My hair looks healthier.

It's hard to put on at first. Hold your hair as if putting it in a ponytail, twist it around as if putting it in a bun, use one hand to hold the hair in position, use the other hand to pull the wrap over your head. It's easy to do after a few times.
I've had my wrap over a year (cream) and I've just bought a new one (blue and green).

championquartz · 08/03/2019 12:11

I have fine-ish, greasy hair. Horrifically greasy as a teen. I have tried everything. Everything. I just wash it everyday. Tiny bit of conditioner on the ends. There is nothing that will change how your sebum glands work (well. no shampoo). Your PCOS might well be a contributing factor.

If you have acne, spironolactone is an option but it's medication and unless very necessary who wants to take meds.

KatharinaRosalie · 08/03/2019 12:18

Been there - also tried all those greasy hair shampoos and yeah it maybe extended the time for washing by like half a day, but it also made my hair straw-like.
How about an alternative solution - if your hair gets dry and frizzy from using oil control shampoos, switch to a nourishing shampoo and conditioner instead (Kerastase Nutritive is great). Use plenty of conditioner and nourishing deep conditioning masks. This way you can wash your hair as often as needed and it will be in better condition.

Imacliche · 10/03/2019 17:27

Loreal 3 clay shampoo. Honestly. Game changer.
