My hair grows so slowly! Any help?

I’ve always had fairly slow growing hair, curly and wear below shoulders. I had a disastrous cut over a year ago and a subsequent rescue cut took it to my jaw line. Now over a year later, and it’s still only just touching my shoulders.

Any ideas?? I already take a multivitamin, but am willing to try some crackpot schemes to get my locks a bit longer Grin

ViviscalmProfesional. A bit ££ though.

I’ve been using the Keratin treatment by Pantene with the intention of repairing my dry over processed hair that doesn’t really grow. And it’s grown loads!

Thank you both. Will have a look

Biotin.

Might be worth having your iron levels checked as low iron can prevent hair growing or contribute to hair loss.

No product put ON the hair will make it grow- it grows from the roots and is dependent on your diet, hormones and wellbeing.

Are you sure it's not growing normally? They say half an inch a month is average growth which would be 6 inches a year- that's roughly from jaw level to shoulders.

Vitamin D.

I always had slow growing hair too, until for totally unrelated reasons I started taking vitamin D. Now it grows much faster.

I take ~4000iu/ day. Most supplements don’t contain enough. Unless you spend a lot of time in the sunshine you’re probably low. If you take any supplemental calcium you should discuss with your doctor before adding higher strength vitamin d.

JinglingHellsBells · 03/03/2019 13:27

Most calcium supplements contain next to no Vit D- mine don't- Osteocare. I have read that it's safe to take up to 25K units a day in some research papers. Not that you should but this was the upper limit on some research on the pros and cons of Vit D.

Treatments you put on your hair will help only if it’s only appearing to grow slowly because it breaks a lot at the ends (do you use a lot of heat on your hair/ harsh dyes/bleach?)

And yes iron levels can also affect hair growth, so it could be worth getting your iron levels checked too.

Thank you all, v helpful. I take Centrum multivitamin each day but no idea of Vit D content, will check when I get home.

I’ve been anaemic previously a couple of years ago but fine at the moment.

Don’t use any heat or treatments on my hair- I’m very much a wash and drip dry girl.

Will have a look at biotin and vit D- thank you!

I’ve only ever been a haircut once or twice a year person, but it seems extra extra slow at the moment. My youngest keeps asking me when it’s going to grow back!

Another for vit D and also a high strength B complex.
I was hugely deficient in D and B12 and had awful hair - thinning a lot and not growing. It's still not right but the loss I'm having has slowed down a bit since I've been on prescribed meds.

A few years ago my daughter bought me a head massager as joke/daft present as an extra present at Christmas.

Apart from it feeling orgasmic Grin I think it helps stimulate the scalp.

I'm old and been through the menopause and my hair has not got thin like some of my peers so it is possible that it helps with growth.
