Clothes swap events

What are your experiences?

I went to my second one last night as I like the idea of just swapping clothes you no longer wear rather than buying new.

The items I brought along were in good condition and some with tags still on them. I wasn't expecting high end but it looked like some people had just offered worn out, bobbled and faded items.

I did enjoy the evening despite not finding anything that I really liked. My friends found a couple of dressy items that they thought would suit me, but I didn't get a chance to try them on then, as it was pretty hectic. They are nice but I still don't know whether they fit. If they do, we'll organise a night out and if they don't then I'll take them to the charity shop.

If you go to them regularly, what tips can you offer for next time? Thanks.

Hmm. My friend who is a very different body shape and size to me always manages to get some really lovely stuff.
I did not have such luck on either occasions.

There is another one coming up soon in a local cafe, in town and I have a feeling it would be trendier as it will be close to the university student population.

I arranged one for charity last summer. It went well, lots of happy customers. Mainly friends and friends of friends though so no piss takers. People brought lovely stuff to swap and we had a range of very good labels.
At the end of the day it's better to swap than throw stuff away so it's worth a try. It was certainly in my experience a much better range of clothes than you'd ever find in a charity shop. Main problem we had was that there wasn't enough variation in size and most stuff t hat people brought along was between 8-14.

I'm a big second hand shopper but I've not done well out of clothes swaps. It's partly because they've all been organised by friends or colleagues (who know I like to buy second hand) so I've felt obliged to get into the spirit and pick things, even though the choice was dire. I've ended up coming away with pieces of crap that I've re-donated the first chance I got. But if it was a bigger, more anonymous event I might give it a another go.
