Hylauranic acid......when should I use it.

Any advice please?

I'd like to add hylauronic (sp?) acid to my (basic) skin routine but I'm not sure when I should be using it and what I should be using.

Can you help?

At the moment I do the following. I've been specific with what I'm using so those in the know might be able to say don't use/do that use/do this instead.

I've always been very lazy and just washed my face with gentle soap but I've slowly built up this routine and so far I love the results.

I'm 50 with sensitive combination skin and lifelong hormonal chin acne. The salicylic acid has transformed my chin btw. It's wonderful stuff.

PM
Remove makeup with Nivea micellar water.
Cleanse with LRP Toleriane and hot cloth.
Lancôme Genifique Yeux
No7 Lift & Luminate serum (except on chin)
V55 salicylic cream on chin
Lift and Luminate night cream

AM
Wash face with Simple age resisting face wash.
Skyn Iceland....Icelandic Relief eye cream.
Lift and Luminate serum
Lift and Luminate day cream.

Where in my list should the hylauronic stuff go and which one should I buy?

Goodness- imo you are using far too many products, most of which are simply replicating each other.
You are risking irritating your skin or wasting a lot of cash.

You need either the Lancome, OR the No 7 serum OR the L&L night cream. Not all 3.

I'm in my 60s with good skin which I put down to SPF 30+ daily for the last 25 years, every single day and no booze.

I use micellar water in the morning, followed by Olay 3 point Regenerist then factor 50 sunblock/ primer and foundation.

In the evening I use Take the Day off, then apply either
Olay 3 point
OR
Evolve facial oil
OR Evolve HLA with one of the other two on top.

If you want to sue HLA you should apply it under your moisturiser.

The Lancôme is for eyes and the serum and moisturiser work differently but together. Quite normal to use both.

As hylauranic acid is used for hydration I would use it depending on how much hydration you need. So if you are very dehydrated start off with perhaps once or twice a day. If not cut it down to once or twice a week.

I also use salicylic acid and if I am using hylauranic acid I apply it after the salicylic acid and before moisturizing. It's wise to allow products to sink in as well which you probably already know.

However my salicylic acid is not in cream form in which case the hylauranic acid should be used before your salicylic cream as it is to be applied before creams.

If it's of any interest I use:

AM

Wash with a low PH facial cleanser
Glycolic acid
Niacinamide acid (with salicylic acid on any spots)
Spf 45 moisturiser
Then I apply my makeup

PM
Double cleaner using the same low PH cleanser
Glycolic acid
Salicylic acid on any spots
A retinoid emulsion solution (from The Ordinary as are my acids)

AmIOTTconcerned · 28/02/2019 17:58

Sorry should have added that when necessary I use the hylauranic acid (from The Ordinary) after salicylic acid in the morning. I don't like anything that adds extra hydration before bed as it causes me to break out!

JinglingHellsBells · 28/02/2019 18:13

sorry my french isn't great- I realised afterwards you meant an eye cream.

HLA Is just a plumper- you can use it any time but I'd tend to use it under a moisturiser as it's not actually a moisturiser, it's supposed to sink in and plump up the skin.

I've used a variety of HA serums, some of the ones I've liked are Hylamide Sub Q which is a watery serum, Hydraluron which is a gel texture and the Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating serum which is a lotion type texture. I've also heard good things about The Ordinary's Buffet serum but never used it.

My recs are all serums, so if you try any of those, then you'd probably be best using them in place of your No 7 serum. You could introduce it every second day, and continue to use your No 7 serum on the other days. You could use it just in the morning routine or just at night, or both, experiment and see what works best for you.

If you wanted to layer your serums, i.e. use your No 7 serum and your HA serum in same routine then you would use whichever serum was lighter first, wait 30 seconds or so for first serum to sink in, then apply the thicker textured serum.

In terms of your SA, I use my SA product first as it is lighter in texture compared to my HA serum, I apply it to the bits of my face that I target, brush my teeth then apply my HA serum all over and I don't have any issues with reactions and I've found my skin less congested over time.

Continue to use your night cream/day cream over the top of any HA serum as HA serum needs an occlusive layer over the top to seal in the HA as otherwise the HA can take water out of your skin, which is the opposite of what we want it to do.

I like the Nip and Fab serums with hyaluronic. (Dragon's Blood one)
Buffet is gloopy and slimy and I threw mine away ( I also don't like the ethics of the company owner so won't buy anything else from them)
The Superdrug pure one has ceramides, not sure if it has hyaluronic, it's not listed on the bottle (unless the range has different ones)
The HA serum many rave about is a Korean skincare one whose name escapes me, but I've ordered some.

Beware of Simple as a brand, it's anything but.

HaventGotAllDay · 28/02/2019 19:04

(the biggest difference anything has made to my skin is a Vit C serum and an avid toner- I'm 53)

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 28/02/2019 19:10

I agree the nip and fab serum is nice. I like the texture and it's often on offer at Superdrug.

I also don't like the ethics of the company owner so won't buy anything else from them
Are you talking about Brandon Truaxe? If so he commit suicide last month, not that I'm defending some of his behaviour but he was clearly a very troubled man.

VeganCow · 28/02/2019 19:45

I think this is known to be the best HA you can buy. I get mine on eBay from trusted sellers direct from Japan Hada Labo

MaidenMotherCrone · 28/02/2019 19:51

Brilliant advice, thank you so much.

I love The Ordinary Buffet! I am a bit skeptical about skincare generally as I think it's mostly a con (and have been disappointed with a lot of other Ordinary products) , but that, along with Weleda skin food, I just LOVE!

pocketdelia · 28/02/2019 19:58

I read a brilliant book called the Skin Bible written by an experienced dermatologist who said there are only a handful of ingredients that actually have an effect on skin:
Vitamin c (for cell renewal)
Retinol
Matrxyl (peptides)

All combined with good cleansing and SPF of course.

She also said exfoliation is key, so I use glycolic acid pads overnight.

Usually, vitamin c serum contains hyurolic acid also.

You can get all 3 of these products cheaply on Amazon.

I use those 3 in the morning and at night I cleanse with glycolic pads (after cleansing) and skip retinol.

HaventGotAllDay · 28/02/2019 20:06

I didn't know that about the Ordinary guy, but yes, that's what I meant.

Skin Food is amazing- I had some red patches from wind chapping in December and SF cleared it straightaway.

Hada Labo! That's the Korean one I was trying to remember.

Treeballarae · 28/02/2019 22:13

I think we're thinking of the same Superdrug Pure serum as it does contain ceramides, but it does contain sodium hyaluronate according to website ingredients, albeit a wee bit down ingredients. For £2.99 I thought it was worth a mention. I guess it's more of a hydrating serum rather than a HA serum.

Aqua, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycereth-26, Polysorbate 60, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Boswellia Serrata Gum, Dipropylene Glycol, Allantoin, Sodium PCA, Pentylene Glycol, Sodium Lactate, Lactic Acid, Serine, Urea, Sorbitol, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Phytosphingosine, Cholesterol, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hydroxide, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Disodium EDTA.
