What shampoo to use? I've read many are unsafe in early pregnancy

Hi! I'm 6w5d pregnant and am trying to minimise my exposure to external toxins after reading (from multiple sources) this is recommended in the first trimester, especially the weeks before the placenta begins filtering toxins. External toxins (found in cleaning products, everyday beauty products such as moisturiser, toothpaste, deodrant, shampoo and conditioner) can be absorbed by the body and thus may have an impact on growing baby. I'm no medical professional nor scientist, and there is no concrete evidence here (no one tests on pregnant women), but it makes sense to me if I'm trying to nourish my body with food, I also try to reduce exposure to toxins.

So baring this all in mind, I'd love to know what shampoo/conditioner others out there recommend? Or has anyone even concocted a natural homemade recipe that worked?!? Thanks!

Absolutely no need to do anything of the sort. None whatsoever. Not even from a “better safe than sorry” perspective. Anything that would get into your body in sufficient amounts to harm a baby would harm you much more first.

As long as you're washing your hair with it and not drinking it you really don't need to worry.

LizzieSiddal · 27/02/2019 14:25

Do you use moisturisers, make up, perfume, cleaning products, eat non organic food, Drive a car, walk through traffic?

Honestly, millions of babies are born every year and their mums have done all if the above without any issues.
However, If you really are so worried about what goes on your skin then maybe use those for babies as they contain very little perfumes etc and will be can gentle, but you really do not need to worry. Flowers

In the kindest possible way you need to stop googling unless you want to live the next 8 months in constant stress.
Use the NHS website and follow their guidance which is based on evidence and science. A lot of what you read will be American guidance but remember that their food standards are a lot lower than ours which is why their guidelines for food are much stricter.

WallisFrizz · 27/02/2019 14:25

I really don’t think you need to go to the lengths of making your own shampoo or tbh even changing brand. But if it will give you piece of mind, why not just google natural/organic shampoos and conditioners, there are loads out there.

Wolfiefan · 27/02/2019 14:28

What are your “multiple sources”? If it’s based on a google and not peer reviewed scientific data I would step away.
I avoided some essential oils. I have a history of mc and was anxious.

NewFitMe · 27/02/2019 14:29

I wash my hair with baking soda and apple cider vinegar. I think it’s called the no poo method. I’ve been doing it for years and my hair is in great condition. But I’d say avoid products that have parabens in them if you choose to buy

dementedpixie · 27/02/2019 14:32

I never changed any of my products when pregnant with dd and ds. Seem to have survived ok as have millions of other babies

londonliv · 27/02/2019 14:33

Lucky enough to have had two healthy babies & stuck to the exact same beauty products I've always used. Tbh it didn't even occur to me not to!

Follow the guidance on nhs website. I avoided raw/rare meat & fish, pate, blue cheese & booze.

You'll drive yourself crazy if you start stressing about potential toxins in everything.

Megan2018 · 27/02/2019 14:38

I've not changed a thing product wise!

I'm an anxious sort - but I've carried on exactly as before (currently 11+2)

Mind you - nourishing your body with food doesn't work when everything that isn't a beige carb makes you vomit - you might find that goes out the window shortly! I didn't get sick until after 8 weeks but I am very food adverse still.

It sounds like you are putting way too much pressure on yourself.

rosydreams · 27/02/2019 14:42

Its probably all a bunch of anti vaccine twoddle theres so many unproven articles on google its ridiculous.Listening to them will do more harm than good dont stress.Your going to be a great mum because you care.

Dont google stuff ask on mumsnet you will get a lot more logical answers than the paranoia machine

pinkpunky · 27/02/2019 15:11

Thank you so much! You've made me feel a lot more relaxed about keeping things normal and stepping away from google! xx

Not due to pregnancy but more to do with allergies , I use a company called Faith in nature. They have shampoo, conditioner, shower gel etc. Also some Oxfam charity shops stock it or just look online.

Applesaregreenandred · 27/02/2019 18:26

Agree with everyone else this is something you don't need to worry about but second Victoriabun that if you do want to look at a more natural shampoo then Faith in Nature is available in Holland and Barrett; they also have their own website.

pinkpunky · 28/02/2019 10:01

Thank you! I've also ordered some Faith in Nature to try out. xx
