Talk to me about permanent box dyes please

I have an increasing amount of grey. I've used a couple of semi- permanent box dyes at home and they look good initially but don't last very long. Will permanent dye ruin my hair? What are the tips and tricks? So I just touch up the roots? I cannot afford to have a colour done at the salon, so need home dye advice please!

Permanent dyes never ruined my hair. It made it soft and shiny. The first time you use it you apply all over. When roots start to come in you apply to roots only to start with and then add to the rest of the hair for a shorter amount of time

Depends on the colour too. If your dying blonde then it can damage your hair but other colour brown or black are usually less damaging

They won't ruin your hair I find it makes my hair more shiny when I dye it.

I use all kinds of brands and find no huge difference between them.

RogueV · 27/02/2019 10:19

I regularly use a permanent box hair due to cover greys my hair looks great! The colour just grows out as well rather than fade but I only wash my hair once a week.
Check out Clairol and L’Oreal dyes

Birdie6 · 27/02/2019 10:19

I've been using them for 20 + years. They seem to improve my hair if anything. I think hairdressers like to spread the myth that "they ruin your hair" - but they don't. Just follow the instructions, you can't go wrong.

Janecon · 27/02/2019 10:23

When I use a box dye people always comment on how healthy and shiny my hair looks. I've recently started having it done at the hairdressers again and it doesn't look as shiny. And costs almost 10 times as much. Go for it!

Fazackerley · 27/02/2019 10:28

I used one for years and it was fine. Certainly didn't ruin my hair. EVentually it wnet a bit brassy in colour though. I've just started going to hairdressers to have it done and it last longer and i prefer the colour.

FlamingoFlamenco · 27/02/2019 10:28

I've got one on my head right now.

Always, always use the conditioner supplied with the dye. Not just when you dye it, but every time after too. I'm nearly 60 and my hair is still soft and shiny - and a fab colour too
!!

VelvetPineapple · 27/02/2019 10:35

If it goes wrong you’re stuffed. It took me years to grow out a bad permanent dye job.

M0reGinPlease · 27/02/2019 10:50

I use a good quality salon shampoo and conditioner, so that should help with the condition afterwards.

So obviously I need to choose the right shade. I'm dark brunette and want as close to my true colour as possible. Any particular brands anyone recommends?

I'm going against popular opinion but I do think they ruin hair, they make the ends very dry and knotty but I still use them as I'm not paying salon prices!

AhFeck · 27/02/2019 17:43

I bleach, tone and olaplex my hair with box products. Perfectly fine and it's in very good condition.

The big brands aren't going to put their name on a product that is known for making people go bald or turning their hair green are they.

Shookethtothecore · 27/02/2019 17:46

Can I ask if you ladies are all doing dark hair? Or dying blonde aswell?!

Cleffa · 27/02/2019 17:50

I use Garnier Oila and it always leaves my hair healthy and shiny looking. I find the colour holds well too, I only need to re-do it because my roots grow in but it doesnt fade.

BusterGonad · 27/02/2019 17:54

Dark brown

dementedpixie · 27/02/2019 17:56

To do blonde on hair that is dark to start with you would have to bleach it first. I haven't done that myself since I was a teen

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 27/02/2019 17:56

I’ve been using Nice N Easy for over a decade to cover greys (I have very dark, almost black hair) and my hairdresser is always impressed with the colour. It costs about a fiver, is always on offer and my hair always looks shiny. I use it once a month and have occasionally seen root touch up kits in places like Boots.

RockyFlintstone · 27/02/2019 18:02

If it's just brown to cover grey, then just go box dye. It's bollocks that they ruin your hair, it's just crap made up by hairdressers to make you spend 10 times the price with them. The only problem with them is that they are usually quite warm undertoned, which is why you sometimes get the ginger tinge after a while. But the developer is usually just regular 20 vol peroxide same as what would be used in a salon. If you want a bit more of a bespoke shade range, then look at Majirel by Loreal, it's their professional range used in the salons but you can get it online and there are loads of MN threads about how to do it.

Going lighter is tricker to do at home tbh, as when you are lifting your hair it will go through the orange phase, but again look online and there is so much info about it these days. And obviously highlights would need a professional hand.

But honestly, for brown covering grey, at home is the way to go. I used Nice and Easy medium brown for years and it was fine.

The worst dye jobs I have ever had have been at the hairdressers, I have never been able to find a decent one!

dementedpixie · 27/02/2019 18:22

When I dyed mine I used a medium brown number 5 (without any other numbers after it) which didn't tend to have red undertone

dementedpixie · 27/02/2019 18:24

In think it was garnier nutrisse number 5 I used

GreenandBlueButterfly · 27/02/2019 20:07

I use Clariol number 5G. My natural colour is dark brown

Like Cleffa I use Garnier Olia too. I use the dark Bronze shade and it leaves my hair great.
