Thickened painful toenail

I’ve got a manky toenail. I’ve hear about using Vicks. Has anyone tried Olbas oil? It’s what I’ve got in the cupboard, it’s volatile essential oils so I would think it might work in the same way. I’d love to hear from anyone with experience of this glamorous condition!

No advice but following with interest. My big toenails are thickened to the point that I'm unable to cut with nail scissors or clip with nail clippers.

I have four like this Blush. The four smallest of my toes. I can't get scissors or a nail clippers round them. I think the answer is to see the GP and they will ask you to provide a sample of whatever you can move from the underside of the toenail, send that off to the lab, and the prescribe something. I know this because I did once (5 years ago) see the GP about it, and then did nothing.

No advice but might be worth checking with your GP, my mum had this on one toenail and ended up having it removed as it was causing too much pain wearing shoes, been fine since

I'm watching with interest as i might have this on my littlest toes. I always thought that it was related to being squashed inside of shoes.

So what is it exactly? Is it lots of layers of nail growing over one another or all at once? Or is it a certain condition? Is it common with increasing age? Fascinating stuff the body.

Vicks and original listerine!! Must be the old original listerine not the new fancie flavoured listerine.

If your toenail is discoloured as well it could be a fungal nail infection. I've had this on both of my big toes at separate times. I used Boots own product to get rid of it. It's like a pen with a sponge on the end, you use it for a week and then let the nail grow out. My toenails are as tough as old boots and the only way I can cut them is to soak them in a bowl of hot water for a while, this softens the nail and makes it easier to cut them

It's worth checking if it's fungal with your GP. I've always had one like this, from birth, it's not fungal so a real mystery. Some chiropodists have said the nail bed had been traumatized, whatever that means.

Eesha · 28/02/2019 08:15

Slightly off topic but with my thickened nails, someone in my nail bar sanded it down with a tool. Much cheaper than going to the chiropodist!

Ooh I have this....its a nightmare. What on earth do you do with the Vicks though? And how does it work??
