Hair help for daughter !

My 10 year old daughter has very thick hair and when it's tangle free it's beautiful , but we really really struggle with tangles, her hair is straight at the top and wavy at the bottom.

Any miracle products anyone knows about as we are both getting fed up with brushing that takes forever !

We use a tangle teezer and plait at night , but it still just matts itself into huge tangles.

Any tips! Thanks!

Do you use conditioner?
And the plaiting may be making things worse if her hair is growing through straight now - it may only be wavy/more wavy due to the plaits which tend to cause tangles.

Dd likes the strawberry shampoo and conditioner and conditioning treatment thing from the body shop.
It is hard work though, thankfully she does it herself now she's a teenager.

A silk pillowcase can help.

MargotLovedTom1 · 25/02/2019 07:22

Mane & Tail detangling spray.

Dd has thick wavy/curly hair. We use a shampoo for curly hair and then the Schwarzkopf Supersoft spray while damp. Comb only while damp with a wide tooth comb, plait for sleeping and if it needs taming while dry we use a salt spray and detangle by hand.

My daughter has same hair. I've tried curly girl routine. I found the whole routine isn't practical for us so adopted parts of it (changing to conditioner only washing mostly with shampoo just once a week, Changing to curly girl approves products. Lots of moisture products) I bought a silk cap for her to sleep in but she's having none of it (I've tried it though and I wake up with better hair than normal!). We've not found the holy grail method/ products but it has improved things. My daughters hair is wavy at top and curlier at bottom. It's waist length and hairdresser says curly bits are still her baby hair so will be prone to more knotting. She won't cut it shorter so we just have regular trims. I think when baby hair is gone it'll be a lot easier to manage. We also plait at night or do a twist plait as if we didn't she'd be matter and in terrible knots x

Google the curly girl method. You don't need to follow it to the letter but I've been doing it for a while now and the difference has been amazing. Great tips for detangling without destroying your hair

Thanks for all the tips ! We always use conditioner but will definitely check the curly girl method and try to invest in some better products for her hair Smile

Does she swim a lot? Chlorine coats the hair and makes it sticky which means it's more likely to tangle. If she's a regular swimmer then every month or so wash it with fairy liquid to strip the hair. Don't get it in her eyes, it's not pH balanced so could cause damage. But it makes a tremendous difference to the hair.

emelsie · 27/02/2019 19:40

Thanks will try that , she swims once a week so not a huge amount but it's at school so she isn't able to wash the chlorine out right away so that probably isn't helping.

Hair oil eg ultimate blends put on when still wet. Also speeds up drying

GemmeFatale · 02/03/2019 17:11

Get her to soak her hair (under a tap wll do) and shove a tonne of cheap conditioner in before she gets into the pool to limit how much chlorine gets to her hair. The school should have showers for after swimming, even if it isn’t a good hair wash she should still be able to rinse the chlorine off her skin and hair.

For detangling, I use the OGX Coconut Oil weightless hydration mist and a wide tooth comb. It detangles better than a lot of detangling sprays because of the oil it contains, which doesn't stay greasy on the hair (it evaporates out, unless you've really overdone it).
